reportting by Maia Snow: The reading crisis in the UK is more of a threat to the book industry than AI, according to Pan Macmillan CEO Joanna Prior.... Prior warned that “AI changes how we work”, but “the reading crisis changes if we have a business at all”. She said: “In the face of this crisis, our nostalgia is a luxury we can no longer afford.” Prior explained that the world had changed, and children were now being asked to “navigate a digital maze with no map at all”. Her goal for the industry, she told the crowd gathered at LBF’s Main Stage, was to make “the book as accessible, urgent and socially relevant as the notification”, adding: “I’m not about to pitch our industry in opposition to the smartphone; that’s not a fight we would win. “The reality is this: we can no longer expect today’s reader to meet us on our terms; we have to meet them on theirs. Our challenge, therefore, isn’t to retreat from technology – it is to use it to radicalise our delivery.” Prior also spoke on the threat of AI, but added that the industry was “stuck in a loop”, worrying about whether a “machine might one day write a Booker Prize winner”. She continued: “The uncomfortable truth is that while we obsess over the machine’s ability to write, we are ignoring our audience’s fading ability to read. We’ve spent so much time fearing the artificial author that we’ve overlooked the disappearing reader.” Prior did confirm, however, that she was committed to protecting authors and illustrators, and would continue to “lobby fiercely” for copyright protections. She explained that publishers should “meet readers where they are”, and evolve the way books are published, making the most of audio, comics and more, by “taking the story off the pedestal and putting it back into readers’ hands”, adding: “Let’s never dismiss a book as ‘not proper reading’. We are effectively punishing someone for following their own curiosity. There is no more certain way to lose a reader forever.”

Rechts het nieuwe alternatief Prikkert: een strak, wit en overzichtelijk ontwerp zonder enige reclame, waarbij direct de lijst met voorgestelde datums en beschikbaarheid centraal staat.
Ik was de pop-ups, reclames en trackers van Datumprikker helemaal zat, dus bouwde ik zelf een alternatief. Altijd gratis, geen reclame, geen account, geen tracking. En open source, zodat dat ook zo blijft. Plan je volgende etentje, vergadering of borrel eens met Prikkert.nl!

Worth repeating: Claims of "AI" democratizing anything (coding, creative endeavors, etc) are always BS. The thing locking out people from doing that is not having the time/resources.
You want to democratize coding/art/creativity? Give people paid time off to do it and access to infrastructure. Easy
