It had a little label on it that said it would NOT attract indigo buntings, and for years we assumed that - for some inscrutable reason - indigo buntings must be undesirable birds (???) but it was actually the opposite, everybody wants to see 'em but this particular seed would not get you there

The number of times I have seen something in Starfleet Academy and said "this is exactly like Degrassi: The Next Generation" has been more than I expected, but there's still room for even more than that
They have given me seven cadets who are all roommates and friends so I don't know why they keep doing episodes that only have 4-5 of them even showing up. I don't even think this would bother me in a 22-episode season, but it feels janky with only 10.
Okay, I WILL permit myself ONE complaint about Starfleet Academy: I don't know if it's a budget thing or a lack of interest in doing it, but the refusal to have the whole gang participate in things is getting to me. Like, where is Ocam this episode? Why did they write Jay-Den out of last episode?
I do understand it FULLY for anything online - but for like... books at the library? And it was happening when I was that young too, when youtube didn't exist yet! I remember a friend getting grounded because his parents read a book I lent him and decided it was inappropriate!
Also I guess depending on your opinion of me, "turned out fine" might be a stretch 🤣 at least I don't think whatever's wrong with me is because I was reading books from the adult section at age 13
I remember picking up the first Paksenarrion book when I was a little too young for it, and I got to the assault a few chapters in and I was like "okay! This is too much for me right now!" and I put it back on the library shelf and I moved on (and I read it in my 20s and loved it!)
I overhear it at the bookstore too, like "I have to read it first to make sure it's okay for you" and I'm just like... why? Is it not enough to say "if you have questions or concerns about something you read in a book, come talk to me" (this is a rhetorical question, I have heard answers before)
Not to be all "my parents didn't do this and I turned out fine" but my parents did not pre-check all the books I read as a tween/teen to approve them for me and I turned out fine, and every time I see a post where a parent is doing that I feel my eye start to twitch
And we're not talking the ones that are ever relevant to the story. We're talking "are you allowed to like Jaehaerys II, who was so irrelevant that the show adapted his entire generation out and people didn't notice". Characters so minor I did not know they had traits to like or dislike.
One of the funniest things happening in the ASOIAF fandom in the wake of AKOTSK is that we've returned to protracted discourses about which lesser Targaryens it is acceptable to like and which ones are problematic. ...the Targaryens. The conquest and incest monarchs.
Also I forgot that going out and doing errands together right after we both finish work now means that Greg looks like a respectable gentleman and I look like a total ragamuffin because he's in an office and I'm at home all day lmao oops
We bought a new dishwasher today, and I feel like dishwashers of different price points and brands are a lot more similar than, for example, ovens and refrigerators of different price points and brands. Like the variance seems a lot smaller
I cannot get a reliable hawk ID to save my life though because I'm never quite quick enough with the binoculars. Like it's PROBABLY a red-tailed hawk but I couldn't really say that with any confidence, so I'm not counting it 😔
The bird gossip so far is mostly "fuck off this is my branch" or "please come fuck me" or "worms worms worms worms worms". I think there might have been an "oh fuck there's a hawk" in there too. Further developments to come.

It was nice enough out at lunch today to sit outside and eavesdrop on the birds. I’m getting all the hot bird gossip. They don’t even know I’m engaging in bird espionage.
TIL that a "filbert" is a hazelnut and when I have seen mentions in old British books of characters harvesting filberts or whatever, those are hazelnuts lmao. Do not ask me why I thought it was a mushroom.
