Ichthyology class learning about zebrafish reproduction. Doing some embryo sorting.
Big thanks to NM Game and Fish for having my Ichthyology students and I out to help with walleye spawning. Great experience for the kids!
Interesting take. I agree Universities have become businesses and have misplaced their priorities, but not all Universities are the same. As a faculty at small University my job is to do all the tasks he described and I promise you I'm not better for it.

I don't disagree that there is a lot of bureaucratic non-sense, but the 'bull shit' job issue may be one of scale.
I think this may be a little short sighted. I would argue a majority of universities are on the smaller size. As an assistant professor at a small university we lack a lot of the usual staff and have to do most things ourselves. This also becomes a burden and takes away a large amount of my time.
The honors program at my undergraduate alma mater did a short piece on me.

Great to have enthusiastic undergrads imaging their first zebrafish after exposure to PCB 126. Our current political climate might be dire, but our next generation of scientists are looking bright #ecotox π§ͺ

Sometimes getting to the bottom of the topic requires more than just skimming a news article.
Iβm really proud of the work we all put into this video, and I hope itβs a useful tool as topics like fluoride pop up more and more in the news. Lemme know what you think.

Our first of a set of exposures exploring contaminant resistance in zebrafish and their unintended physiological consequences. Feels good to get going on this and start my first exposure set in my new lab!
Massive caves in Kenya weren't formed geologically, instead created by elephants seeking salt, breaking up rocks with their tusks and licking away the cavern walls. π§ͺ
I lump Fisher in with the rest. I've found Fisher can be better at times, but still marks items up well above what they should be going for.
Is anyone else relying more and more on alternative sources for lab equipment like Amazon? It feels like VWR, Thermo, Sigma, and the like are making it impossible to get a lab going if you have limited funding... π§ͺ
Not to mention this article comes from a Chinese news source (state media) that doesn't explain how they determine if a scientist is 'influential'. They vaguely mention citations but don't give specifics.
Got to use my new microscope camera today. 24 hr old zebrafish.
Not only does Bennu contain all 5 of the nucleobases that form DNA and RNA on Earth and 14 of the 20 amino acids found in known proteins, the asteroidβs amino acids hold a surprise
