Hoping someone with a larger following will see and amplify this call to establish an endowed poetry award in Renee Good's name at her alma mater, Old Dominion. I can vouch for the faculty who started this--he's a very good guy and this is a fitting tribute.

Front cover of the book Citizen by Daisy Hernandez
Quote about immigrants to the US being in a colonial relationship to the nation and this are political citizens
Iβm reading this incredible book by Daisy Hernandez about her experiences with and thoughts about citizenship. It is brilliant and eloquent and puts faces and names to the individual stories connected to larger issues of immigration and citizenship. And you should all read it and get your book clubs

Jailed for refusing to abide by FDR's Exec Order 9066, he took his case against internment all the way to the Supreme Court - and lost. Remember him on Korematsu Day, January 30th. 1/
It shouldn't surprised anyone that this administration is going after Black journalists. The white Christian nationalist agenda is rooted in white supremacy and along with it a heavy dose of anti-Black racism. One only has to see the response to Minneapolis to see how this is being weaponized.
There are people waiting outside the Whipple building to help the people ICE has let out without coats and their phones. If you can help the helpers, I hope you will. The cruelty of this admin knows no bounds. And so does the kindness of strangers.

CNN: Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost assaulted at Sundance Film Festival event, police say By Aleena Fayaz Updated Jan 24, 2026
NBC News: Man lunges at Ilhan Omar during town hall and tries to spray her with unknown substance January 27, 2026
Two Democratic members of Congress attacked in three days. Maxwell Frost was assaulted on Saturday, Ilan Omar tonight.
Hearing folks are bummed they missed the Eyes on ICE training - but good news, it's all recorded and public! We'll be holding more live trainings soon, but if you aren't one of 200,000 who already watched it, find it here: www.youtube.com/live/zqka9fU...
Democrats should demand every sitting Republican decry this attack and explicitly denounce it, and then censure all of them when they donβt do it. Act like normal decent humans defending your colleague.
Rep Ilhan Omar was attacked by a man during a live stream town hall. And the comments on CSPAN are demoralizing because people don't believe it's real. This is what we've come to as a nation. And yet again a woman of color carries on with grace and grit.

Americans have a caricatured view of democracy of something that has just always existed, and this is an unfortunate oversight. American history has always been a conflict between democracy and authoritarianism. Hopefully we emerge more democratic on the other side. 9/9
Long story short, if you want to understand authoritarianism in America, you cannot view it as a foreign or unprecedented ideology. It has always been here. We've tamped it down, but it is an ongoing struggle. Hopefully we make progress after this madness is over, but it is never truly over. 8/x
The struggle between authoritarianism and liberal democracy is an enduring part of American history. We are currently living through another chapter of this long running conflict. We've made progress towards being a multiracial democracy, but democracy has never been universally accepted here 6/x
Americans have a habit of trying to compare all authoritarianism to Nazi Germany. I think in some ways i think it is comforting to view authoritarianism as a foreign ideology. If you want to understand our current authoritarian moment, you need to look to our own past, not to Europe 1/x
Not only is authoritarianism not new, it is still in our living memory. Southern racial apartheid is more recent than the Nazis, and more relevant to understanding our current politics. As American politics have nationalized, the South anchors one of the two parties and exported its politics 5/x

AOC: "It is reported he had a permit. And this administration's response is that the very that he was a legal firearm owner was reason for them to shoot him in the street ... if we do not do something now, I do not what can happen afterward. We have to contain this chaos."
