Among all kinds of marginalized groups, there is a strange belief that we all have that says that, “If I can distinguish myself from the other people who seem to be like me, and show that I’m not like them, then I’m okay." Transvestites say, “Well, I’m not one of those gay men. I don’t have sex with men. And I’m not one of those transsexuals. I don’t want to cut my penis off. I just want to wear women’s clothes. There’s nothing wrong with that.” And homosexuals would say, “Well, I’m not one of those weird, kinky transvestites. I don’t dress up like a woman. I’m really serious. And I’m not one of these homosexuals. I’m a woman.” Each of them seem to have the idea that someone in our society will say, “Oh, of course. You’re okay. It’s those other people I don’t like." And that never happens.
