Our Care Closer to Home: Primary and Community Care Conference 2025 is in full swing today in Birmingham ๐
We're pleased to host over 400 attendees who are eager to hear from national and local experts and participate in discussions about the future operating model for care.
The Health Secretary tasked NHS Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) to be โpioneers of reformโ through โstrategic commissioningโ. Commissioning is how ICBs spend ยฃ164 billion of public money to improve health. Our new @nhsconfed.org report sets out what strategic commissioning should be. ๐
Amanda Pritchard said on BBC Radio: โWe need to think much more radically, particularly about capitalโฆI think we now must consider private capital investment in the NHSโฆif we donโt fix our buildings, if we donโt fix our technology weโre not going to... really drive that long term improvement"
Very welcome to hear the NHS England CEO say today that we need to think about private capital investment to support the NHS - two days after our @nhsconfed.org report said exactly this (covered in FT)

And great to see the report's findings covered in today's @financialtimes.com www.ft.com/content/8ce9...
Pleased our new @nhsconfed.org report proposing an overhaul of the NHS capital regime - to cut delays and speed up investment in modern estate, equipment and digital technology - out today. This is vital to improving value for tax-payers' money.

Important to note, that both measure only the volume of activity hospitals do, not actual health outcomes. Therefore any NHS investment which keep people healthier and out of hospital in the first place (what most of us want) just count as a cost and would, perversely, lower the productivity figure.
This is both fascinating and exasperating. NHS England say NHS acute hospital productivity us up +2.4% on last year, ONS says it's down -3.6%. Have we ever had such widely varying official data informing policy-making?
Really welcome to see the proposed NHS Payment Scheme for 25/26 commit to launch โpilots to test out new payment mechanisms to support NHS prioritiesโ - as our @nhsconfed.bsky.social report proposed last March #NHSreform

Kudos to @ejcjones93.bsky.social and the rest of the @nhsconfed.bsky.social team for this everything-you-need-to-know analysis of the planning guidance published today. Enjoy.

As we get stuck into the New Year - and I get stuck into Bluesky - and work on NHS reform continues at pace, this feels like a good time to reshare some thoughts for @futuregovforum.bsky.social on what the government needs to do to make change happen www.futuregovernanceforum.co.uk/2024/10/14/h...
