Meet the Sooty Grouse, a forest dwelling, chicken-like charmer of the PNW! Pictured here is the male, in spring, they puff bright yellow air sacs, hoot dramatically, and strut to impress camouflaged females.

Spring Collision Monitoring

We are seeking volunteers to join survey routes from April 15 through May 29 at Seattle University, the Seattle Asian Art Museum, and Downtown Seattle; as well as volunteers to conduct surveys around their own homes.

Typically found at edges and in open areas within coniferous forests, Rufous Hummingbirds are also found in sub-alpine & residential areas. In damp western WA, they are found in many habitats. East of the Cascades they are limited to higher elevations with more rainfall.

The Bufflehead is Washington's smallest diving duck. Buffleheads' breeding habitat is small lakes and ponds in boreal forests with nearby stands of poplar and aspen. In the winter, they are most often found in coastal areas in shallow bays and inlets.

Northern Spotted Owls are medium-sized owls with brown eyes and no ear-tufts. They live in mature forests with complex vegetation at multiple levels near water sources. A single pair of Spotted Owls requires 2,000-5,000 acres of contiguous forest.
