I did some research regarding this in the past and finally ended up in the same solution...

Maik Michel presented a solution with knockout.js at APEXconnect 2023 (meine.doag.org/events/apex-...) but that feels a bit hacky too for a breadcrumb.

Shared Components update: Data Load Definions have been moved from section Data Sources to Other Components in 24.2 - #orclapex

The new 24.2 APEX_SHARED_COMPONENT package looks promising! #orclapex

Hope to get some addional procedures in future releases - like adding a message added via APEX_LANG.CREATE_MESSAGE to a component group.
