Early morning earthquake in northern Louisiana (magnitude 4.9). This is the largest event in the region since 1950.
If you felt shaking from this event, USGS uses these data to map ground-shaking impacts. Follow the link on the “Felt Report” tile.

Recent results to simulate the 2024 New Jersey earthquake. We find that 3D simulations better reproduce observed ground motions, compared to 1D simulations or regional ground-motion models. We need more evaluation studies to test the accuracy and value of simulations for future hazard assessments.

Hmmm. I turned “US Geological Survey scientists” into “US Geological Scientists” earlier. I’m blaming it on my pre-coffee (or second cup of coffee) state.

The seismometers at the end of the earth have names
Scientists have placed two seismometers 8000 feet below the ice cap at the South Pole to measure earthquakes and support tsunami alerts.
US Geological Scientists have installed new seismometers at the South Pole. These super-deep instruments are the quietest (and deepest) on Earth and piggyback on other scientific projects in Antarctica.

People in This San Francisco Suburb Would Like the Earth to Just Stop Shaking, Please
I like to call them “earthquake infestations”, most seismologists call them swarms. Regardless of the name, the hotbed of seismic activity in San Ramon, CA has an article in the NY Times and features USGS seismologist Annemarie Baltay:

Please consider adding alt text to posts with images as folx who rely on screen readers for vision loss deserve equitable access to information, and you can update your settings on BlueSky so that you cannot post images without alt text, so you are prompted to add it if you might otherwise forget! 🙏🏾

U.S. tsunami warning system, reeling from funding and staffing cuts, is dealt another blow
Seismic monitoring stations in Alaska are closing after a denied federal grant, risking delayed tsunami warnings for people living on the West Coast.
Quoted supporting our counterparts and friends at the Alaska Earthquake Center. The cost of the U.S. tsunami warning and mitigation effort is really a pittance. None of it has ever been adequately funded in any administration, and now things are worse. ⚒️ www.nbcnews.com/science/tsun...

For seismic hazard modeling, we refer to these uncertainties as “between-model uncertainty.” We also incorporate additional uncertainty estimates when we want to capture the full uncertainty because of the recognition that alternative models are (typically) developed to model mean/median metrics.
