A slide showing different examples of making questions more engaging by re-wording the instructions for the task. For example, instead of "calculate the following", ask "which of these have the same answer?"
A slight change of wording is a quick win to ask more engaging questions.

Been thinking about this. I suppose what you say here is generally true. My difficulty with it is that it has generally not been true in my experience. I think classrooms are more like a fractal, and even when you siphon off, say, the top 25%, the same dynamics re-form themselves (or should).

You don't think there's an analog on the other end? Take a group of struggling students who can't yet access the grade-level content at the pace at which it's being presented, but instead present them with a selected 70% of it, and there's a chance they'll learn it instead of learning very little?
