UK plans scheme to suck CO₂ from the air
Ministers are to start negotiations with the Swiss firm Climeworks as part of the government’s new zero strategy
@climeworks.bsky.social could be getting into CO2 removals in the UK
Energy secretary Ed Miliband has begun talks to set up the UK’s first commercial project to suck carbon dioxide directly from the air and store it in old gas fields under the Irish Sea

Trees are like people: they like food, get sick, struggle when it gets too hot or too wet, & die.
We need to be careful including trees in climate targets, particularly when we keep serving them food in a warming climate.
Yet, most countries include all trees!

Just stunning at how quickly Greece has transformed it's energy mix.
In a decade, coal has been pretty much driven out from 50% to 6%
More to come as solar expands 👍

CO2 emissions from Land-Use Change (LUC) have been relatively flat for decades, but have declined in the last decade. Uncertainty is high!
The estimate is based on four "Bookkeeping Models", but have many shared input data.

Pleased to see this paper out!
Are the values in Table 8 on the RCB correct? Subtracting a correction of 370 GtCO2 from the 83% percentile of AR6 would give -70?

Chart of BEV versus H2FC sales but quarter since 2015, drawn on the same scale. BEV sales grow, H2FC sales are invisible - the chart looks the same as it did when first published in 2017.
Today's #HydrogenSoufflé is an update of a classic. I'm very much looking forward to the launch of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen in 2028, and seeing whether it can manage a single pixel on the RH chart before being taken off the market.

I’ll says this once:
We’re spending a lot more on mitigation (e.g., renewables) than on CDR research. A lot more.
It could simultaneously be true that CDR research acts as mitigation deterrence and we need to do CDR research.
Trees will not be enough to reduce atmospheric CO₂.

How to boost the policy impact of climate advisory bodies - Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research
A new study examines how advice from climate advisory bodies, such as the UK's Climate Change Committee, can better influence climate policy.
🏛️ Not all advice lands equally.
🗣️ New research shows short, clear and repeated climate advice = better uptake.

CDRXIV is a new open access platform for sharing preprints and data related to carbon dioxide removal (CDR).
Climate change is happening quickly. Solutions research needs to move at a speed that meets the challenge. We're launching @cdrxiv.org, a new preprint server for CDR research, because transparency and collaboration help move the field forward. Let’s make better CDR, together: cdrxiv.org

In short, net zero by 2050 is far from arbitrary and the Conservatives supported the scientific rationale underpinning net zero until late.
Now they are walking away from the cross-party consensus and their legacy of leadership on the matter.

Given we will move from importing fossil fuels from a handful of countries, to minerals and metals from a large number of countries, decarbonisation reduces trade risks. By some estimates, net zero reduces trade risks by 25%.
