Andrew Smith is a YA author (MARBURY LENS, GRASSHOPPER JUNGLE, etc) who always paints a pretty detailed setting without pausing the action, but he can lean toward the disturbing/grotesque side of the fantastical.

something that took me many years to learn as a writer is that if I say in chapter 14, "They agreed to drive to the rendezvous point", then chapter 15 can just be the characters at the rendezvous point. I don't have to show any of the transition from A to B unless something goes wrong in their plan.
