With the sadness of leaving also comes real excitement about what’s ahead. More on that soon, but for now I’ll be packing boxes and wondering how a hydrologist ends up owning this much stuff when most fieldwork requires little more than waterproofs and a bucket.
I’m deeply grateful for the support, mentorship and collegiality I’ve experienced here, and delighted to have found many new friends. Moving my family here was a big decision, but one I’ve never regretted.
I even learned the names of more tributaries to the River Wear than I ever thought possible (a skill that, sadly, is not yet monetizable). But more than anything, it’s the people who have made this time memorable.
In these five years, I’ve accumulated plenty of memories: from flooding experiments staged in a white water rafting course (because nothing says “robust science” like a kayak slalom), to foggy days in the Peak District stumbling across peatland dipwells like a very clueless tourist.
The department has been a consistently supportive place to be, which is no small thing in a sector currently being held together by goodwill, overwork, and heroic levels of patience.
Today marks my last day at @durhamearthsci.bsky.social after just over 5 years. It’s a strange feeling closing this chapter; I’m grateful for the opportunities, the science, and the amazing colleagues and students I’ve been lucky to work with.
