The fact that Duke Energy is sending texts begging people to cut back on heating use during what the weather service is calling an extended "extreme cold" event tells me the state of NC has no business building data centers or anything similar

When it became a federal holiday, folks started treating it like any holiday. I remember cussing out a poor JC Penney manager because the store was having a “White sale” on MLK day. He didn’t have a clue and my mom was so embarrassed. But I was in my high-horse Black nationalist phase. Sigh.
Honestly, I’m still a bit mad that King’s birthday became a federal holiday. I remember when it wasn’t and it was an act of civil disobedience to take the day off from work or school to honor him and attend celebrations. I loved that.
