The diagram highlights which adjacent value is lighter/darker as the shapes intersect.

From left to right, the wing is darker than the hat, then the background has a small patch where it’s lighter than the hat, and then the hat again becomes a lighter value than the background.

Not going to lie, the title gave me quite a scare!
