(it's a fun gimmick and I admire the dedication to the bit I just don't personally want to go back to 1999!)
Bob Costas and Doug Collins are covering the Spurs/Sixers game with the old NBC logo and uniforms and I'm genuinely shooketh, like I've stepped thru a wrinkle in time or I'm having one of those nightmares where I'm back in highschool
Finally, I didn't write it, but the best thing I read last week was @annapeppard.bsky.social's deep divefor @comicsxf.com into the sartorial history of Captain Marvel & Marvel's current obsession w/retro minis featuring the most scantily-clad versions of characters.

While she wasn't the focus of this particular discussion, I try to pay tribute to Monica Rambeau where I can.

ICYMI: jotted some phrases this week for @comicsxf.com about Marvel's recent bevvy of supposedly fun throwbacks:
"Let's consider whether sexiness severed from character really sells as well as someone somewhere seems to assume."

I don't want to say what the employment thing is quite yet but the book contract is for an academic anthology called "Small Screen Supers: Essays on Superhero Television," co-edited by myself and Dru Jeffries. Hopefully just a year or so away from putting it in front of your eyeballs!
Signed a book contract and an employment contract today, so that's pretty okay

Don't think I've seen this before! Super interesting. Part of what pains me about the black costume is that (at least the way Cockrum draws it) I don't even dislike it. It could work for someone else! Just not for Carol, a person desperate to be taken seriously (sometimes to her own detriment!).

It's all very perplexing to me from a marketing standpoint if nothing else. Objectively, doing 90s throwbacks is not the way forward. The comics market is growing but not in that direction.
Thanks so much!
Did words for @comicsxf.com about Marvel's recent throwbacks to things I'm very un-nostalgic for:
"If you care about Marvel as a publisher of comics, itβs worth observing the desperation attending these attempts to appeal to supposedly dependable demographics that are actually increasingly niche."
Dr. Anna Peppard examines the history of Carol Danvers' costumes and Marvel's current obsession with miniseries that put its women back in more dated looks.
Hey guess what? @sequentialscholars.bsky.social has started a new unit of threads focusing on Naoki Urasawa's "Monster"! #Manga #Monster #ComicsStudies
