@andrewhickey.500songs.com re. Georgie Fame bonus episode: The Skatalites covered Mongo Santamaria's "Yeh Yeh" under the title "President Kennedy". Fame is rumoured to have played on "Wash Wash" by Prince Buster (recorded 1963 in London). Can anyone confirm that?: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtBF...

Apologies. Found it: Dec 2, 2024. Excellent as always, especially how you overcame the problem of scant sources. Something I'd add is that neither Pyramid nor Trojan credited The Aces on Dekker's LPs. Dekker and his brother are also on Tougher Than Tough by Derrick Morgan, playing the defendants.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com If you plan to do a bonus episode on Desmond Dekker, I have done some research showing that his mother was born in 1927 (making her 13 or 14 when he was born) and died in May 1947, when he was 5. His dad cut sugar cane in Florida in 1946. Can supply.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com Zoot Sims, aka Noel Simms, was in a duo in 1960 called Bonnie [Bunny] and Skitter, doing backing vocals on "Oh Carolina". Coxsone then got them another session with Count Ossie which produced this African nationalist tribute to Lumumba: www.youtube.com/watch?v=esgV...

@andrewhickey.500songs.com Prince Buster's "Rum And Coca Cola", from his eclectic LP 'Ska-Lip-Soul' (1965), is extraordinary because he seems to be parodying The Andrews Sisters' cultural appropriation and mock pronunciations rather than Lord Invader's original www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1Xr...

@andrewhickey.500songs.com I have doubts about the Ivor The Engine connection. The earliest broadcast I have found was 28.12.59, when Townshend was 14. He'd have been aware of the cartoon from the listings, maybe, but he was too old for the target demographic.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com If I had one criticism of The Temptations' catalogue, it would be 'Running Away (Ain't Gonna Help You)' from Puzzle People. It quotes "I'm gonna get'cha" from 'I'm Gonna Make You Love Me' but in a much more threatening way. One of Motown's most misogynistic compositions.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com Compare the bass intros to I'm Gonna Make You Love Me and What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted. They both have a heart-beat sound interspersed with a single drumbeat but the Ruffin intro is at a slower tempo. Both obviously just genius arrangements.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com Tamla Motown had a strange lull in the UK in mid-1968. On 1.6.68 they had no singles on the Record Mirror R&B chart. The turnaround in the Autumn started with an oldie: This Old Heart Of Mine R&B No. 1 - but it had never gone away www.soul-source.co.uk/articles/fea...

@andrewhickey.500songs.com There's a parallel between Pete Townshend and Sly Stone - relative optimism in 1969 but cynical by 1971. Other artists probably had a similar journey but in their own unique ways - e.g. Marvin Gaye, Nick Drake - for different reasons.
