A while ago I bought one of those cheap QR scan modules with the idea to hook it up to gameboys link port using a small MCU. With your code it would make two way communication possible.
Nice! That's one big QR code version 31 there. the fun part must be that they will be created by the gameboy right? ;)
Not sure if it will be suitable for your Minstrel 4th but an Idea I've been playing with in my mind is to give MCU access to VRAM during Z80 M1 cycle so it can fill it's video cache. The Z80 won't be able to execute code from VRAM then though.

That screenshot looks ok. It doesn't show the clock though. Have you checked that? You could also try configuring the I/O ports of the AY-3-8910 and see if you can read from or write to them.

Works great on the Japanese rom but not so on the EU one as another mistake was made which causes the soft reset to freeze
In EU rom the LCD is turned off by the soft reset code. This causes the freeze as the start up code waits for scanline 144 which can not be detectect with LCD turned off
