Canada needs to increase its productivity performance. But we keep talking about the wrong things.
What would actually help?

Public Service Announcement: When the price of gasoline jumps this week, remember it was refined from oil (mostly Canadian) produced weeks ago, only 2% of which comes from the Middle East. It's a policy choice, not 'market forces', that explains why you'll pay more (and oil profits will soar). /2

As the price of oil & gas explodes, I recently read about how the price impact is almost entirely speculative, as the *supply* of oil and gas hardly budges, particularly in places like Canada. It's all just straight up profits for the gas companies. Remember that as you fill up the tank this week.

B.C. to raise minimum wage to $18.25 per hour this June : AM 1150
British Columbia's minimum wage will increase to $18.25 per hour starting June 1. The province said the 40-cent increase from $17.85 keeps pace with inflation.
BC’s minimum wage will increase to $18.25/hour on June 1 but Living Wage BC and BC Policy Solutions says it falls short of a living wage across the province.
They call on the province to raise the minimum wage to $20 per hour to help narrow the gap.

Revamping primary care is a solution to family doctor shortages and long wait times.
And not-for-profit models mean health centres can coordinate services, not compete against each other.

Prime Minister Carney's promise at Davos to "build our strength at home" would do well to draw on the example of former Canadian cabinet minister C.D. Howe, under whose guidance Canada established 28 new Crown corporations to expedite the mass production of military equipment during the Second World War.
NEW from me: my latest column on the need for a new generation of public enterprises - a key missing piece in both our economic resistance to Trump and our climate mobilization 🧵👇

Carney’s argument rests on the assumption that the benefits of “growth” will trickle down. This has been debunked again and again through every major crisis in the last 25 years.
Don’t just take my word for it.
Trust the data, not the rhetoric:

Today is Pink Shirt Day. Bullying doesn't stop at the school gates; it's more likely where power is concentrated, and accountability is weak. The same conditions that make schools and communities less safe for kids make workplaces less safe for adults. 💗

BC Budget Reaction: Iglika Ivanova Weighs In : AM 1150
Senior economist Iglika Ivanova shares her reaction to the BC provincial budget and what it means for workers and families.
#BCBudget26 had no relief for families struggling with affordability senior economist Iglika Ivanova told Vista Radio.
$10/Day child care was paused; no investment in public transit; the carbon tax rebate wasn’t replaced, especially affecting low-income families.

NBC ran a piece where Mary Carrillo went to Norway to find out why they're so good at the Winter Olympics and i was yelling BECAUSE IT'S COLD THERE
then she went to a little tiny ski jump for kids and was like "it's free, equipment is provided, & they don't emphasize results"
and i was like.

The BC government is furiously defending a new term they made up, called "re-pace", to describe removing many long-term care facilities from the capital budget
They really don't like people saying they've been cancelled or indefinitely delayed
But also, there's no longer any financial commitment
