That thing where you idly wonder whether you are going to wind up excommunicated when your next book comes out, or if you should file off a few more serial numbers from your Definitely Not the Catholic Church.

My daughter reported that the ICE presence outside her school during recess last week involved ICE officers sitting IN AN ICE CREAM TRUCK. And this wasn't kids misinterpreting. We had an email from the school the day it happened; we just didn't get the ice cream detail in the email.
"Still life Reslicitando" by Remedios Varo features a surreal composition where fruits and dishes appear to orbit a centrally placed lit candle, creating a scene that defies gravity. The rich textures and mystical atmosphere are characteristic of Varo's unique blend of magic realism and imaginative storytelling in art.

ICE has arrested and detained a Nashville journalist who reported stories critical of ICE. Sheβs married to a U.S. citizen and has been seeking asylum here after fleeing death threats in Colombia because of her journalism there.
Theyβve already sent her to Louisiana.
That looks so good!
A great, thoughtful piece from @mollytempleton.com.
Somehow, it is 25 years since I graduated law school this year? Sounds *extremely* fake.
A well done Winter's Tale is such a delight.
Congratulations!

You have seen a part of my soul I did not know I possessed! Thank you!
I feel like their publicist should send me one, for my Woes.
Please see into my very soul! That sounds fun!
I seriously cannot wait for this book.
A man asked me last night what publishing needs to do for literary fiction to begin appealing to men again. I said, as nicely as I could, that, with over 2,000 books published every Tuesday, of which many would appeal to men, itβs not a publishing problem, itβs a men problem.
Thank you so much!
This novella is actually one of my favorite things I've written. I'm always so happy to see it mentioned.
Ah, thank you!
Artists! I am looking for a Jewish illustrator for a middle-grade project focusing on Jewish history, practice, and culture. If your style feels fun, MG-appropriate, and both editorial & narrative, please drop a link or DM! (And editor & agent friends, if you have someone to rec, it's appreciated!)
I'm hiring an archival documentation specialist to help me donate my immersive game collection. Is this up your alley? Please apply!

A woman trying to save her city has to slit a few throats to do it in this noir-inspired dark fantasy world, a story I wanted to tell that was the reason I became a writer.

A long overdue reckoning for Henrietta Lacks β the Black woman whose cancer cells led to breakthroughs but were harvested without her consent. Novartis has settled a lawsuit by Lacksβ estate that alleged the pharmaceutical giant profited off her cells.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devilβs sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,β My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.
And on and on
Writers of Bsky: Scratch is back! This time as a weekly newsletter/blog about how writers are surviving ~these times~, run by me, @manjula.bsky.social, @maggiemertens.bsky.social, and @latriagraham.bsky.social. You can read more about why/what that means in our announcement post below.
What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.
A St. Paul police officer fabricated a massive sex trafficking case and had multiple people locked up under false charges. The Supreme Court yesterday affirmed a ruling that she can't be sued by her victims. She appears to still be employed by the St. Paul PD. ij.org/press-releas...
