It got bought recently (last year?) by folks who actually care and it’s been seeing a lot of success since then. They’re really on fire right now and it’s great! But hasn’t been that way for a good bit.

New Marvel fighting game from Arc System Works looks RAD and I'm super excited. But there's one thing that irks me about it – the title:

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls

Sounds cool enough, so what's wrong with it? Nothing. Except people. Let me explain...

But that's okay. It doesn't matter! And you can bet your ass I'll be mashing buttons alongside all of them, no matter what they call it.

A small Venn diagram of people in the world will be ever-so-mildly cursed to hear tōkon pronounced "wrong".

And some portion of the new MARVEL fighting game's massive fanbase will hesitate slightly when saying it aloud.

What would've been a better name? I don't know! And even if there was, why ditch a perfect pairing of dramatic and beautiful Chinese characters?

I guarantee you people already have that exact same word tattooed onto their body.

But as someone who used to do translation and localization (mostly JP->EN), it pains me – just a teensy tiny bit! – when a high-profile thing has a Japanese name that will inevitably be mispronounced when native English speakers try to read it.

I suspect most Japanese creators tend not to consider (or care) whether something will be pronounced "correctly" in English. They don't have to, and it's unreasonable to expect them to.

Also, to be fair, this is a very Anglo-centric gripe. Other languages might naturally pronounce it closer to the "correct" way. Why should they make an accommodation just for the English-speaking world?

(They shouldn't, of course!)

You could argue that it's actually a PLUS, in a sort of niche/meta sense. Any attention you can get, even if it's people arguing over something as tiny as the pronunciation of the title, is hard-won currency in this day and age.

Here I am writing a much-too-long thread about it!

But remember BlazBlue? Remember always being just a little bit unsure whether it was "blahz blue" or "blazz blue" or "blaze blue" (or "blay blue" if you read the katakana)?

It's not quite as bad this time, but it's the same deal.

I keep putting "wrong" and "right" in quotes because there's no ACTUAL wrong or right here. Language is fluid, and I'm not the arbiter. I'm just some nerd.

I wouldn't be caught dead correcting someone saying "SA-moo-rye" or "kary-OH-kee". I'm not the speech police. You shouldn't be either.

But the choice of a Japanese word that doesn't have a roughly accurate English approximation means that we're doomed to hear it the "wrong" way forever.

And that's only true for those who even know the "right" way. Ignorance is bliss!
