THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

to me it rocks that this company that has never come within light-years of making money and has a bad product with zero practical use cases is the pivot point of the global economy because a bunch of embarrassing Burning Man dorks just decided it should be

The Bride! would be an excellent double feature with Alex Ross Perry's Her Smell, and would be a good excuse to rerelease Her Smell with a different title so it's no longer called Her Smell.

know I’m AI-posting a lot today, but holy shit read the linked lawsuit for this. this is probably the worst of these so far, by far (contingent on the brief being accurate, which isn’t guaranteed). the other ones were people with existing ideation not being stopped, this actively pushed him.

I wanna say that was a real "we have affirmed in writing that OpenAI is willing to take $100b, if we decide to give it to them, at some indeterminate point in future, by the way this is definitely NOT a binding contract" kind of thing.

Before anyone jumps in, yes, I know AI can write better than YOU can.

And I am saying it's shit.

Get it?

AI is good for coding and still can't write for shit. Makes you think about who the most highly skilled workers in the economy really were, doesn't it?

Now, I'm about to give you another quote about autonomous weapons, and I really want you to pay attention to where I emphasize certain things for a subtle clue about Anthropic's ethics:
Anthropic had not argued that such weapons should not exist. To the contrary, the company had offered to work directly with the Pentagon to improve their reliability. Just as self-driving cars are now in some cases safer than those driven by humans, killer drones may some day be more accurate than a human operator, and less likely to kill bystanders during an attack. But for now, Anthropic's leaders believe that their Al hasn't yet reached that threshold. They worry that the models could lead the machines to fire indiscriminately or inaccurately, or otherwise endanger civilians or even American troops themselves.
So, let's be clear: Anthropic wants to help the military make more accurate kill drones, and in fact loves them. One might take this to be somewhat altruistic - Dario Amodei doesn't want the US military to hit civilians - but remember:
Anthropic is totally fine with the US military using Claude for anything else, even though hallucinations are an inevitable result of using a Large Language Model.
Any dithering around the accuracy of a drone exists only to obfuscate that Anthropic sells software that helps militaries hand over the messy ethical decisions to a chatbot that exists specifically to tell you what you want to hear.
