DOMUS AUREA! Back to my first love - Roman archaeology.
It's been so long since I was last here that Nero was just getting the keys to it.

I was the historical consultant on this new documentary on Les Vikings, and also feature as one of the on-screen experts. A lot of fun to do and all the people involved were great!

That's a part where the documentary show the myths of the Vikings, so you see that horned helmet in order to refute the myth!

Cluster of Viking Age silver amulets from Öland.
A Thor's hammer, spiral beads, and a pendant resembling a fire steel are attached to a larger ring along with eight smaller rings.
This possibly signifies Odin's Draupner ring, which produced eight rings every ninth night.

⚡️🔨 Two Viking Age Thor's hammer pendants from Birka's 'Black Earth'.
One Mjǫllnir is iron and the other amber, with the latter likely only half finished.
It seems they were popularised as a symbol due to Viking Age Scandinavians encountering cross-wearing Christians ✝️

🗡 Analysis of a Bronze Age sword found in Nördlingen has revealed that the decorative inlay on the octagonal grip was made from copper, demonstrating a previously unexpected level of metalworking sophistication in the region.

Viking Age paganism and Christianity sit side by side on a set of female jewellery found at Krasse, Gotland.
The box brooch has both pagan and Christian symbols, but the necklace, made of fish head shaped pendants with inlaid crosses, seems entirely (?) Christian.

An early entry for #MosaicMonday. What a lovely city wall mosaic with detailed towers and gates! @romanpalace.bsky.social - how does this compare/contrast with yours?
Takes your breath away.

Sandstone cross back dropped by church, above which blue sky. Lens flare partly obscures decoration on weathered, lichen covered surface. But central boss and interlace pattern visible.
Side of cross at top, with relief carving of spiralling snake motion with open mouth.
Netherton Cross, about a thousand years old, covered with mix of figurative & geometric designs including beast headed figures, snakes, boses & interlace patterns. An example of Govan School sculptural tradition relsting to the Kingdom of Strathclyde
