We live in an area with a rather large muslim community and a mosque (since early 90s!) (also a catholic Church that's quite active with Filipino community). There does not seem to be any friction, but of course that may change...

(Very) broadly speaking, there's a strong freedom to belief & religion practice here. Of course, with the rise of anti immigrant sentiment in some specific places, there's an anti immigrant related religion movement... But that's more about migrants...

If they have children, then the impact of the religion would depend on their gender. I could see the clash if the father is foreign & religious & devout—but that's a stereotype I have... and in turn assimilation issues for the children. Statistically though, wives tend to be foreign.

Oh far from me to be 100% right! I see what you mean! But I would say Japanese are spiritual and not religious so they would be unlikely to convert (the marriage wouldn't happen in the first place) or if they do, they might not turn to be very devout. Does that make sense?

Cultural clashes are bound to happen, but probably not with religion in the context of an international marriage—Japanese people are barely, if not, religious at all. You'll find the true key issues are work and gender cultures.

No idea what you mean here! This is to be taken in the very specific context of Japanese's perspective on dual citizenship, which some have missed despite me saying it's about Japanese mixed kids. Children themselves, have the right to define themselves. Parents, however, should protect them.

A little girl in an elementary school uniform , the yellow on her backpack indicating she was in 1st grade. A woman in a beige trench coat holds her arm as they walk through the station together. That girl would be in her 20s now. I’m sure she still remembers the trench coat lady.

I took this photo 15 yrs ago today, at Korakuen station, after being stuck underground on the Marunouchi line. The little girl had been on the platform crying alone, so the woman in the trench coat- a total stranger- comforted her & lead her over to the long line of people waiting for the payphone.

Our current (private) daycare is apparently so popular they now have a waiting list 😅 Things sure have changed since 3.5 years ago. But also the city has a 6% growth (give or take) and they are not increasing services.

I know right… We steam our veggies with our oven, and pretty much do mainly oven based stuff so… On the other hand, we’re wondering if we should ditch the rice cooker 🥹

Zenodot — Find book translations across languages Discover book translations across languages. A documentary tool for readers worldwide.

I spent 4 months trying to answer a simple question: has this book been translated into my language?
Turns out no one tracks this. Not ISBN registries. Not Amazon. Not Google. Not libraries.
So I built a tool that crosses four databases to piece it together.

(To clarify: mixed heritage doesn’t make someone less Japanese. It’s an addition, not a subtraction. A child can be fully Japanese and also connected to other cultures through their family. Parents should try not to reinforce the idea that “mixed” means “not fully belonging.”)

That’s very rough, and I’m sorry to hear the challenges they faced lead them to eventually go back to their “adopted” home. It can be tough to fit back in. I don’t think I’d be able to return to my home country, though that would be more about me than about the welcome I might get!

Oh far by me to say it’s easy, especially if the foreign roots are physically visible. But if the parents themselves don’t grasp that internalizing that their kids are “less” Japanese is problematic, it won’t help the child with their identity (this is prompted by a bullying case).

YES, THIS. A thousand times this.

10.03.2026 09:15 👍 3 🔁 1 💬 0 📌 0

The parent themselves should not be confused about this when their child holds a Japanese passport, speaks Japanese, goes to Japanese school and grows up in Japan—and even if not all the above are applicable. Darn. I’m rambling.

Grmbl. Foreign parents need to be their mixed child’s advocates. If I say your child is 100% Japanese, don’t counter by “…but they’ll never be completely Japanese.” Yes. They do. They are. Drill that in your mind: holding mixed roots does not mean they’re less Japanese.

We use our oven twice, if not 3 times a day so at least the money is not wasted but ffs I don’t need wifi or smart app or to use my phone with the damn grill.

Thinking of replacing our aging healsio with a bistro but the price 🥹

I dislike the push for over spec in appliances with functionality that we will never, ever, use. They lead to unbelievable prices… But, because we have some specific criteria we have to bite the bullet 😭

I cannot stand adults who believes bullying their children is a way to educate them, as if children were tiny adults able to grasp concepts and consequences at the same level that we do.

Not when everything we’ve learnt about their brain and abilities shows how nurturing with kindness wins.

Sorry to say I think it was the 王林 type 🥹. Looking up Granny Smith’s Japanese name (to be sure) it seems you can order from Nagano producers directly. Otherwise it doesn’t seem to be frequently in store, unless you want to hike to Nissin in Azabu.
