This will be a learning meeting for me - each topic has a different decision-making or opinion-gathering process, & in addition to reviewing the content this weekend, I also watched recorded meetings from Burien & other cities to see how others have navigated decision making scenarios.
- starting the selection process for our commissions, discussing our wishes for council rules of order, and looking at the feasibility of two items - Tax Increment Financing districts, and a Criminal Justice Sales and Use Tax, that could each have substantial impact on our budget.

This commitment would be made in a time of urgency, when federal agencies are actively seizing and incarcerating or deporting members of our immigrant and refugee communities, harming families, communities, our region and our country.
Later in the agenda we will discuss an opportunity to recommit to this claim we make about ourselves. We will review - and potentially adopt - a resolution supporting immigrants and refugees in our city. burienwa.civicweb.net/document/216...
Hello from Mayor Sarah,
This weekβs meeting begins with 2 proclamations celebrating Burien as a diverse community whose strength is in the people of every race, religion, nationality who contribute to our beautiful city, as residents, workers, students, or visitors. mailchi.mp/cf253ebfdd77...
Good write up on recent vote from our last council meeting related to comp plan amendments related to density in specific neighborhoods
These students are learning how to speak up, organize, and participate in democracy skills that matter in a healthy community.
As leaders, our responsibility is to listen, keep lines of communication open, and ensure our schools remain safe spaces for learning, dialogue, and growth. βπΎππΎππΎ
Today, students at our local high schools participated in a walkout to make their voices heard about ICE immigration separating families and taking parents away from from school friends
Whether we agree or disagree with the message its important to recognize that civic engagement often starts young

I'm still learning and refining my role as Mayor and hope to improve with each meeting! Thank you @hugo4burien.bsky.social for the kind encouragement.
Thank you!!
As Mayor, I will preside at meetings, attend city-to-city conversations, & interface with the media & community as the representative of the city. I am still absorbing all of the details of this new responsibility & will be training with the cityβs comms team to make sure I am doing the best I can.
At the Jan 12th meeting, my fellow Councilmembers selected me to serve as Mayor for the next 2 years. We are a council-manager city, so being Mayor does not give me sweeping, different powers, but will add an additional set of duties. CM @hugo4burien.bsky.social was selected as Deputy Mayor.
Tomorrow, Burien City Council will have a special meeting at 2pm and a regular meeting at 5:30pm. Read about the agenda and find links to comment, watch from home, and more, here: mailchi.mp/5c244a087524...
The Burien Severe Weather Shelter is open this week and in need of volunteers. Because the nature of severe weather shelters make opening unpredictable, it can be difficult to have volunteers ready to go on short notice. Thank you for helping our neighbors in the cold!
