New modelling shows renewable electricity can meet NZ’s future demand – without importing gas New Zealand could meet its electricity needs through renewables and avoid power shortages during dry years by combining battery systems with pumped hydro schemes.

#NZpol From a few days ago: New modelling shows renewable electricity can meet NZ’s future demand – without importing gas

- doubts the logic of β€œimposing a levy on electricity to fund an LNG terminal”, β€œbecause New Zealand also has a goal to achieve 100% renewable electricity generation by 2030,”

Not at all, that was a terrific article and I think we are all thinking on the same page, which is great.

Yeah @spil030.bsky.social and I were talking about BEV trains earlier ...

This.

If you think GenAI can do actual critical thinking, you profoundly misunderstand what critical thinking is and how you do so. If you're arguing that it can, that says more about you than it.

Wait, so basically they're using fire ships?

Dang, that's some old-school.

On the positive side of things, the tech for BEV trains with mega-watt charging at stations is becoming more & more developed, so we wouldn't even necessarily need full lines electrification.

Yeah, even the original model 3 from 2017 remains great. I'd totally pick one up second hand if I were in the market for a car honestly.

Model 3 remains hands-down both my favourite car in general and my favourite EV car. I know, yes; Musk. But it stands still as such regardless.

I used to do greenExpo EV rides

The questions I got about EVs.. before the ride

Can it go up hills
Can it get to Diamond harbor (25km away)
Takes a week to charge right?
Its not a V8 tho!

Yes, the trains back in the day when we had a complete country-wide network were steam and diesel.

But how about if instead of making the infrastructure choice to go with airplanes, we had chosen the different infrastructure choice to electrify.

Best time was a century ago. Second best is now.

44,000 passengers to be hit by Air NZ cancellations over fuel, CEO says The airline is set to cancel around 1100 flights over fuel supply concerns, affecting the travel plans of thousands.

Now imagine if we had electrified the inter-city rail we used to have all over this nation.

I submitted on the NZ govt disestablishing our ministry for environment but didn’t have time to share here on Bluesky - far from encouraging efficient democratic decision making the new mega ministry risks further eroding environmental accountability & unlike other Westminster examples, is unwieldy

You know what would also reduce stress & promote wellness? Embrace modern Finnish traditions like: baby boxes & paid family leave, phasing out fossil fuels in heating and electricity & funding education at all levels.

But sure, let's buy a wooden sweatbox & pretend THAT's the secret to wellness.

Damning stuff indeed... *yawns*

Guys it turns out I'm not a climate voter because I want a habitable planet, it's because I want more jobs in the public sector!

(I'm guessing the broader point is 'It's easier to make that vote when you're not a coal miner' but fucking hell they express this ham-handedly).

11.03.2026 01:09 πŸ‘ 10 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

"Has anyone else noticed that sometimes people benefit materially from the policies they vote for?" I ask. "Doesn't this mean they're actually irrational and the policies they support are bad?" I am a professional politics knower and people pay me money.

Wait, he's criticising her for consciously voting for things that benefit her? (alongside a whole bunch of other people)

Um, I hate to break it to Danyl about how voting works ...
