@meghanrosen.bsky.social and I reported from the Stand Up for Science rally today in Washington, D.C. Check out our story, including my photos, here: www.sciencenews.org/article/stan...
Here at the Lincoln Memorial with @alexviveros.bsky.social for the #standupforscience2025 rally
Six fired federal employees told me and @alexviveros.bsky.social about their science-related jobs โ and what the public could lose without them.
We talked to people from NIH, FDA, FAA, NPS, the Forest Service, and Fish & Wildlife for @sciencenews.bsky.social.

These people's jobs are "indirect costs" on NIH grants. Here's what science and medicine could lose without them.
@alexviveros.bsky.social and I talked to a pre-award administrator, systems engineer and flow cytometry specialist for @sciencenews.bsky.social. www.sciencenews.org/article/indi...
Following up here to say that I am also on Signal. You can message me there at alexviveros.01
Is your job, or the job of someone you know, mostly funded by indirect costs on NIH grants?
If so, Iโd love to chat with you for a story in @ScienceNews.bsky.social. You can DM me or email me at aviveros [at] sciencenews [dot] org. #MedSky #ChemSky
I wrote about Vertexโs suzetrigine, and the science behind developing nonopioid painkillers more generally, for my latest story @cenmag.bsky.social. This is also my final story as C&ENโs Editorial Fellow โ more info about my next steps TK!
Can confirm, cheesecake was excellent

I also covered a recent paper about an antiviral called 4โฒ-fluorouridine that protected guinea pigs against Lassa virus and Junin virus. The compound worked even when treatment was delayed until after the onset of clinical signs of disease in the animals.
Two stories in @cenmag.bsky.social this week. I spoke to James Paulson and Ian Wilson at Scripps Research about their new study in Science, which found that one mutation to the hemagglutinin protein of an H5N1 virus switched the proteinโs binding specificity from avian- to human-type receptors.
Iโm the current Editorial Fellow at Chemical & Engineering News and a recent graduate of MITโs science writing program. I mainly write about infectious diseases and the viruses, bacteria, and other little things that cause them.
Feel free to DM me with any story ideas (or just to say hi).
