Button multi-coloured heart with the phrase β€œcelebrating Alberta families”

Happy Family Day. After debuting in Alberta 36 years ago, a February holiday now exists in most provinces. This is a button produced by the Alberta government to celebrate that first one in 1990.

Growing up in Regina, my parents were friends with his aunt and uncle. We ended up buying a tent trailer from John’s parents in Zehner in the late 70s. I remember the drive to the farm to get it. John’s real last name was Agopsowicz - not very Hollywood friendly, so understandable why he changed it.

Growing up in Regina within walking distance of Taylor Field, I know how much this Grey Cup Championship means to Rider fans across the country & around the world. It doesn’t happen often and it’s a great feeling. Big thanks to the dedicated players & coaches that brought it home for Rider Nation.πŸ†

Let us remember today those who fought for the freedoms that so many take for granted. We must remain vigilant to ensure our essential freedom are not eroded again. I pay special tribute to my father who bravely served the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War. Lest we forget. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

A welcome sign for Beachville, featuring the text "Welcome to Beachville" in green and "Home of the FIRST RECORDED BASEBALL GAME 1838" in a circular design. The sign includes an illustration of a vintage baseball player holding a bat. Additional smaller signs are attached, including ones for Scouts Canada, the Royal Canadian Legion, and Girl Guides of Canada, with a road and greenery in the background.

It is said that baseball is America's Pastime, but the first recorded baseball game in North American history happened north of their border.
It was way back in 1838 when two teams came together in a cow pasture near present-day Beachville, Ontario.
This is the story.

FAX technology actually dates back to the Second World War. Interesting article in one of the 1946 Saturday Evening Posts I have in my collection about the new technology and suggests it would fit with that other new tech of the era - FM Radio - as a transmission method rather than phone lines.

Before there was podcasting as a side hustle for many celebrities, and before TV became common place, there was radio. This ad from a 1946 edition of the Saturday Evening Post I have in my collection shows a number of celebrities with successful acting careers who also had radio shows.

I stumbled across this list of NHL player salaries published in the Edmonton Journal that I saved from the last season the Oilers won the Stanley Cup. How things have changed since then.

As my Oilers prepare to take on the Florida Panthers in a Stanley Cup final rematch, I wanted to share some images from this Panthers inaugural 1993 season media guide, which I just stumbled upon while cleaning out some boxes in my basement. Note the first advertiser that appears in the media guide.

The image is a black-and-white political cartoon depicting a man in a suit standing behind a counter labeled "Republican Platform." He is holding a bottle labeled "Untaxed Whiskey, 20Β’ Gal." in one hand and a piece of cloth labeled "War-Taxed Common Cloth, Tariff 84%" in the other. Above the counter, a sign reads, "If you don’t see what you want, ask for it." The cartoon, signed by W.A. Rogers, appears to satirize the Republican Party's economic policies, highlighting the disparity in taxation between luxury items like whiskey and essential goods like cloth.

In 1890, the Tariff Act came into place in the United States. It placed tariffs on imports of up to 50%.
While touted as a way to build American industry, there was also the hope it would force an annexation of Canada. It backfired.
Let's learn more.

The randomness of wildfires moving through urban areas can be hard to explain. I look back to these types of fires that our news team in Alberta covered over the last decade or so, and it boggles the mind how many homes were just randomly skipped by flames in Slave Lake, Fort McMurray, and Jasper.
