But, for example, my teacher emphasized there’s a lot more brusque and direct conversation in the wider deaf community and deaf/hoh folks get flak from hearing folks for being insensitive regularly when they don’t “effectively” code switch—so THAT might be a better reflection in translating sign

Which has so many different ways to say, translate from Spanish to English and requires cultural knowledge of both to be accurate and precise. A single sign can carry a LOT of context, so from what I got of the class, just translating as a sentence length thing might not be an accurate reflection

My only experience is 1 sign class, but the teacher (and other deaf/hoh influencers I follow) emphasized CONSTANTLY that ASL is NOT English. It’s its own language. So u right they elide participles and base sentence construction differs—so this falls into a “translating from any language” bucket
