Today marks 1 year since the first Ask Me Anything (AMA) for AskHistorians in our push to very actively recruit guests, and where are we now? Today is the 90th AMA in that effort, helping us cross the thresholds of 35k upvotes, 8k comments, and 15k link shares in that year (and ~10m views)!

I know there are many writings from the 18th century to today that talk about how culture will or has become the replacement for religion. However, the fact that no one, that I know, has written a book collating all these writings is surprising. A book titled 'Culture: The New Religion' would sell.

I think a lot of the finite commodity of human attention has been captured by AI channels making it harder, especially for new creators, to break into the market. Edutament is also a niche on social media and in a power dustribution rich get richer economy they will increasingly struggle to survive.

Have fun losing to Canada today.

Czech v Slovakia semis would have gone hard. Kudos to the Czechs for making it a very competitive game. After the group stage people where expecting a blow out but Czechs showed everyone that Canada can bleed.

I am still worried because there are fundamental cultural and economic issues with hockey in Slovakia from rising costs to shifts in parents' and kids' priorities and these cannot be solved by the slovak hockey association because they are linked to greater national problems but I am still hopeful.

Having suffered through terrible Slovak hockey post 2012, believing Halak that no new players will come and save Slovak hockey, I was dejected. However, seeing the improvement since 2020, seeing what Šatan has managed to do with Slovak Hockey, I am extremely happy & hope the positive trends continue

🇸🇰 Slovakia in the semifinals of the Olympic hockey tournament again, back to back, is absolutely amazing. We played a great game against Germany and stayed disciplined even when we were up. We are certainly not the favourites but I think other than Canada we can take a game off anyone. 🇸🇰

My Romen Sexuality video is completely banned now. You cannot find it even if you directly search for it. The only way to get to it is to go directly to my channel. Yet Metatron clearly homophobic video on Sexuality in Ancient Rome is up without problems. This makes so much sense YouTube.

Sometimes, specially in public history, it can be helpful to just stop and acknowledge just how crazy the stuff that happened was, because I feel like we don't always internalize that fully.

Fell apart in the third but over all our team has shown that we can keep up with full NHL rosters. We can keep up with the best ... ok, maybe not Canada, but everyone else, yes. I am hopeful for the rest of the tournament. We can definitely be contending for a medal if we keep it up.

Depends. You'll see people mention other interpretations only as strawman, or attack them for their shortcomings without mentioning the same with the first interpretation (every interpretations has some shortcomings). Even with all that though, it is still impossible to be completely apolitical.

I think this happens either when people are unfamiliar with the history that is being communicated (which is fair). Or, when for some reason (unknown to us) the person is trying to hide their (e.g.) right wing political leaning by purposely changing their history communication to be more leftist.

Lol, again, I don't know much about figure skating, but I was on to slmething.

I see sometimes comments that are surprised when a history YouTuber makes a very left or right wing political statement, and I am always like "You are surprised?", it was fairly clear that they lean that way from their history communication. But I guess you need to know the history to notice that.

If you know the history that a history communicator is talking about you can tell fairly accurately what their political leanings are based on how they present it. It's pretty much impossible to be apolitical when communicating history.

This Olympic hockey tournament is so far some of the worst reffing I have ever seen.

Honesty, if anyone other than Canada or USA win the Olympics hockey tournament I'll be content. Even if Finland win a back to back I'll prefer that.

I don't know much about figure skating but personally I don't like the judging in these Olympics. Japan should have won the team competition and the American couple should have won mixed figure skating. But I guess this is the problem with judged sports. It's far more subjective than other sports.

I have not seen such good hockey from Slovakia in a while. This was an amazing game to watch and it is a great start for us. I am so happy.

YouTube has not only demonetized my Rome and Sex video but also age restricted it. Because allegedly the video 'sexualizes minors'. Clearly, who ever made this decision has not actually watched the video or understands what 'educational' content means.

kind of funny that an olympian said they are here to represent "compassion, respect, and love for others" and some people automatically knew that was a statement against them
