Don't know the rules in Scotland but in England and Wales they'll need a trade effluent licence from their water company. Not sure I'd fancy the thought of just being flushed down the drain.
So this is basically the practice much favoured by criminal d-i-y disposers of bodies by dissolving them in lye (concentrated potassium hydroxide - KOH). What the BBC article doesn't say is how the resultant highly alkaline liquor is safely disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner.
