3/3 We were delighted to welcome staff back to the site on such a sunny day, to have a look at some of the restoration works and continue to plant sphagnum. The day was funded by the Environment Agency.

2/3 A partnership of funders including landowner Harris & Sheldon Group, Nestle Waters & Premium Beverages UK, @severntrentwater.bsky.social and the Environment Agency has supported work to enhance the habitat and contribute to #NaturalFloodManagement here.
1/3 Thank you to Nestle Waters & Premium Beverages UK and @envagency.bsky.social, who came #sphagnum planting on Combs Moss this week. In March 2025, we completed capital works on this site near #Buxton, as part of our first blended finance restoration project.
Restoration interventions in these road corridors will have a significant positive impact on both the habitat and the flood and fire risk currently posed in the area. www.moorsforthefuture.org.uk/the-latest/e...
These investments will help protect the road networks along peatland corridors connecting Greater Manchester to South Yorkshire and Liverpool and Hull which are at risk of flooding.
We welcomed a cohort of partners including @nationaltrust.org.uk , @unitedutilities.bsky.social and @rspb.bsky.social to boost nature recovery and create healthy ecosystems.
This week we had the pleasure of hosting the @nationalhighways.bsky.social team for a site visit to Crowden Moor and a day of planting sphagnum moss on Snailsden Moor.
Our team have spotted frogspawn on the moors this week - a sign that spring is on the way πΈ

Itβs #WorldWildlifeDay. Peatlands are home to unique and fascinating wildlife!
Thriving #wildlife habitats is one of the many benefits of moorland restoration. Learn more about moorland habitats on our website: www.moorsforthefuture.org.uk/our-purpose/...

At the top of the image the sky is pale blue with some fluffy clouds. In the background, a dark coloured moorland edge with different shades of brown vegetation stretches across the image. In the foreground there is a an area of moorland with brown vegetation and pools of water.
#MondayMotivation - a beautiful boggy view from the moors. After so much rain, the team enjoyed some fairer weather today.

The sun may be out today, but just a few days ago it was a different story while out #sphagnum planting! π¬π¨

2/2 Our Conservation and Science teams are working hard to finish works on site. Once bird nesting season begins, we will come off the moors to let the birds breed undisturbed. This winter has treated us to continuous wet weather, but #nature is starting to show signs of spring.
1/2 Mountain hares, whose tracks have been spotted in the snow, will soon start to change their camouflage colours from white to brown as the snow melts and spring vegetation emerges. Caterpillars are basking in the few glimmers of sun, frogs are coming out of hibernation. #Peatlands #Biodiversity
3/3 #Sphagnum species that grow in water such as S. cuspidatum tend to be more tolerant of freezing than dry-preference species. Yet it is an incredibly resilient plant overall, that will endure all seasons as long as the bog conditions are good.
2/3 On parts of Kinder where the peat is degraded, the water table tends to be below the frozen layer so measurements can still be taken. However, when collecting streamflow samples, it can be surprisingly hard to predict whether the water will be flowing under the ice or completely frozen.
1/3 Accessing monitoring sites in snow can be a challenge so some robust hill skills are necessary. Maintenance checks need to be done, and data need to be downloaded from sensors measuring water table and streamflow β as long as we can actually get to them!

It's always great to see how #sphagnum plugs are getting on. These plugs, planted on rewetted moorland at Rishworth, are already showing their bright green colours. Sphagnum can hold up to 20 times its weight in water, so its growth on the moors helps to keep these #peatlands boggy and healthy.
Thanks for all your support over the last 23 years β¦ and hereβs to the future of the wonderful moors. Here's a reminder of their beauty, with the video that weβve been sharing on our Bogtastic van since 2017. www.youtube.com/watch?v=14E8...
And our work continues β¦ the Partnership is now set to deliver the highest five-year level of investment yet into the regionβs peatlands, thanks to pioneering natural capital investment from a collective of private finance partners.
Our Communications department facilitates conversations on the work and the importance of these amazing landscapes.
Our work is evidence-based, with our Science & Monitoring department gathering data to better protect and enhance the moors, and our Conservation and Land Management team coordinating the practical conservation work delivery.
Today is the 23rd birthday of Moors for the Future Partnership. The Partnership started as a single project in 2003, restoring the area around Black Hill in the South Pennines, and has since worked on over 250 sq km of blanket bog, bringing life back to this degraded but precious landscape.
Yesterday we attended the "Think Green Tameside: Climate Action Conference", where our Partnership Manager, Matt Scott-Campbell, spoke about the benefits of moorland restoration and where we had many positive conversations with stakeholders in the #Tameside area.

Our Conservation & Land Management team go out in all weathers to conduct vital surveying work for future projects (although in this case the snow yesterday forced them to cut short the day and return to base earlier than planned!)
Last weekend we were pleased to give students from Sheffield Hallam University hands-on experience of moorland restoration, sphagnum planting in the Goyt Valley. Luckily we were able to find a sheltered gully in which they could recharge their batteries and have lunch!

Happy #WorldWetlandsDay! These amazing habitats provide so many benefits, from natural flood management to improving water quality and biodiversity, to helping in the fight against climate change. Find out more about them in this film highlighting our monitoring work:
