Happy Birthday to the late John Hurt, born 86 years ago today
First time watch. There's something very powerful about the lurking insanity and evil underneath the mundane here, where an intense dread can fill a scene that's simply a person taking out the recycling.
Perfect companion piece to Cure. Kurosawa's command of the frame is pure evil magic.
I've written sporadically on the internet before on and off throughout the years, but I'm very happy to debut my new piece via @polygon.com in which I dive into the brief cinematic history of the Black Vampire. If you liked SINNERs, then this is for you.

James Mason's line reading of "I'm trying to hunt down the last pea on my plate" just lives in my brain now
Caught this one later last year. It's so good!
Kind of embarrassing how few Eastwood directed movies I've watched, but JUROR #2 has got me convinced I need to see more. Between this and Nosferatu, I'm also all in on Nicholas Hoult in starring roles. He's got that quiet, reliable juice.
Banderas has really cornered the market on this one.
Give me a single image from a film that immediately makes you hear the song from the soundtrack playing in your head.
Jackie Chan crouching on a silver railing in front of the escalators' upper landing. there is a curtain of vertical Christmas light strands in front of him (and one horizontal) and a couple of gold poles.
Jackie Chan after leaping onto one of the gold poles, clinging to it and about to slide down. this shot is from a different angle so it feels like we're looking up at him instead of head on. half the frame is the mall's ceiling, the other half is the curtain of warm white vertical Christmas lights.
another shot of the mall in a different space, with people in foreground to the left and in background in the center, with teal carpeted stairs to the right that lead to a display that announces MERRY CHRISTMAS over a short white fence. behind it is gifts and a giant rotund Santa.
a different angle of the same display, the giant Santa is now to the left, the stairs run horizontally across the center of the frame with presents on the top step and glittering green cutouts shaped like Christmas trees of various sizes behind them. two bad guys have grabbed Brigitte Lin, caption reads 'Come on!'
Jackie Chan's Police Story is a Christmas movie
Revisiting Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing. Delightful stuff. Denzel's charisma is off the charts, Keanu in sneering Power Rangers villain mode, Branagh and Thompson making Shakespeare seem so natural. Great palate cleanser from the run of South Korean dark thrillers I've been on.
Congratulations to @mattbled87.bsky.social and @a4epodcast.bsky.social for cracking the top five! Big thanks for all the audio goodness π
Plus young Anthony Hopkins and baby Timothy Dalton!
FW: The Lion in Winter (1968)
A movie engineered for Hepburn and O'Toole to chew the scenery up and spit it out. It's Succession set in Medieval England; intense family relationships, a struggle to succeed the throne, and a black, farcical tone that doesn't shy away from the absurdity of it all.
First watch. Hitchcock in pure "just two hotties who want to bone" mode. The cat burglar plot takes a backseat to Grant and Kelly standing around in Europe and burning a hole through the screen with their charisma. Pure, breezy fun.
Up now on my free feed, I go long on one of Action Cinema's greatest unsung heroes, Craig Baxley, and his miracle run of Action Jackson, Dark Angel, and Stone Cold. Subs and shares are always appreciated! Just added some real cool stuff on the paid feed recently too πͺ

Industrial Light & Magicβs gorgeous matte painting work on CARAVAN OF COURAGE: AN EWOK ADVENTURE. This stuff is truly a lost art.
Sorta in a run of bad news. Gonna boost this again, have some new, cool stuff up. Appreciate it as always. Gonna keep pushing and doing my best
powerful images of Lee Van Cleef painting at home in 1967
Same ppl probably went home to post about how the cinema is their church.
This is one of the minor issues I've noticed about this place, hoping it diminishes as more people come in and the platform is more normalised.
Iconic for a reason. Not sure why everyone seems to think Crowe's performance is weak, I think a lot of the non-verbal acting he's doing is pretty fantastic. Reed is clearly the standout though, holy hell. Ridley remains the GOAT.
Eiko Ishiokaβs costume design in BRAM STOKERβS DRACULA, one magnificent creation after another. One of the greatest to ever do it.
That whole final sequence is amazing and Yuen is a big part of it.
Sad to hear but it's more important to take time for yourself and recharge β€οΈ. Thank you for putting out such a great show, a place to hang out and listen to some great people chat movies. I'll be sure to tune in for anything you appear on!
After Hours is weirdly the one I've seen the most. Might not be his best but it's probably my favourite.
Bringing Out the Dead and Age of Innocence also very high up there.
Four favourites by Scorsese.
After Hours
Taxi Driver
The Colour of Money
Silence
Sharon Stone on a dark horse dressed like a gunslinger - seen from behind - at the edge of a cemetery, looking toward the horizon: desert scrub, a mountain range, and a pink-tinged sky
extreme closeup on an ace of spades with a bullet hole at the center - a tiny Lance Henriksen (who's aiming his gun at the card) is visible through the bullet hole
a seemingly towering Gene Hackman seen from an extreme angle, as if the camera is looking up from the ground, on the left side of the frame. he's looking down at a marshal's star, which takes up about a quarter of the screen - the bottom right half. the sky is mostly clear except for a few clouds visible behind Hackman
Sharon Stone's face cast mostly in shadow except for light illuminating her right eye and part of her black cowboy hat. she's standing behind saloon doors
The Quick and the Dead appreciation post
