During my β90s middle school/high school years, The Source was a monthly staple in my required reading magazine rotation. Really beautiful and moving remembrance of James Bernard from Jesse Washington here.

Guilty as charged π I should at least take care of the cubes that show up in pictures and maybe get around to the rest of them later π
I mean, seems only fitting to celebrate De La Soul Day (3/3) with a little @wearedelasoul.com , right?
βSomewhere in this hip-hop soul community was born three - Mase, Dove, and me - and thatβs the magic numberβ πΌπΌπΌ
My dude, yβall have been killing it so hard lately (and, you know, pretty much the whole time as well). Thank you and your team so much for this one. SERIOUSLY AMAZING INSTA-CLASSIC!
(Pssstt⦠whispering now⦠who do we write letters to in hopes of getting this one pressed on vinyl?)
De La on Tiny Desk!!! What a hands down masterpiece of sonic fun and musical genius. @posplugwon.bsky.social and @djmaseoofdelasoul.bsky.social locked my ears down in elementary school and never let them go. We still miss you Dave and @wearedelasoul.com forever!

All of us Gen Xβers who grew up poring through the liners notes and album credits on vinyl albums, the J cards of cassette tapes and CDβs reading all the names involved with the albums we loved will forever love & appreciate the contributions Bob Power made to the music that was our life soundtrack.
A portrait of Bob Power in a studio leaning against a mixing board.
Salute to a man who was probably the single most important studio engineer of my most formative years and beyond. He shaped sound, sharpened samples and varnished vocals. Tribe, De La, The Roots, Badu, DβAngelo and too many more. A true wizard.
RIP Bob Power. ποΈ
Haha, yeah, thatβs a 12x12 record store flat peeking out (R.E.M. posters are deservedly on every wall of my office) but if you want to actually listen to Monster, Iβve got you covered there too π
Pitch-perfect afternoon level-up courtesy of Miss Jackson
Itβs a Juliana Hatfield kinda morning (i.e. every morning). What an end-to-end classic.
If youβre jonesing for some MTV Unplugged reassessing/reminiscing, you might dig my MTV Unplugged podcast (Unplugged Revisited). If you give it a spin, I hope you dig it!

Yes!! So true, @lizzslockeroom.bsky.social! And then his very first post-Wham release with Aretha was so insanely good! Not to mention him showing up on Jody Watleyβs debut album on the song βLearn to Say Noβ - both before βFaithβ was released. What a mesmerizingly great talent!

On this day in 1996, Nirvana won a Grammy for MTV Unplugged in New York.
It took Best Alternative Album at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards.
"When members of sororities and fraternities started dressing up for an R.E.M. show, she said, you knew it was over. Yet we also recognized the structural or ritual quality of this lament. It doesnβt matter where or who you are, things were always cooler before."
Couldnβt agree more! This is super high on my βNever got an Unplugged album but deserves itβ wishlist. What a fantastically beautiful session rich with charm and such a unique sonic thumbprint. Maybe one day weβll get this as a standalone release!

Since itβs βthe definitive versionβ, I really wish it had been included on the single for the latest reissue of BDC.
The whole session actually deserves a remastered release, imo.

As a kid raised by the βTGIFβ Friday night programming block, (A) This is absolutely amazing and (B) I can only hope thereβs a second batch in the works with βChristmas Boyβ Cousin Larry and Santa Balki.
Also, forgive the incorrect song titles in trying to point to how the songs were labeled in the video. Of course itβs Nile on βSkin Tradeβ and Simonβs ocarina shows up on βThe Chauffeurβ - Okay, donβt feel like Iβm holding in a sneeze now π
Same!! Itβs really crazy this one never got a proper album because it is seriously such a phenomenal Unplugged that captures the bandβs sonic thumbprint so incredibly well! Recorded in the same filming session as Nirvana and STP as well. What an insane day at the office!
Right?!? Yes, please! Have you ever seen their Unplugged outtakes that didnβt make the broadcast? They brought out Nile Rodgers for βExploitationβ and then Simon pulls out an ocarina for βBlue Silverβ - insanely great stuff that surprisingly didnβt make the show!

After almost two years, I can finally announce that my next book from @1984prods.bsky.social will be Ferris Bueller...You're My Hero, the history of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It releases June 2, and you can pre-order now at djch.xyz/ferris.
More soon, & I'm looking to do Q&As and attend screenings.
Hey @dartadams.bsky.social, speaking of Saturday morning cartoons, did you dig this album when it came out back in β95? Iβd love to see a Volume 2 sometime, maybe around live action Saturday morning shows, and the βHang Timeβ theme would be perfect for it π

Such a great pick! Hi-Five is wildly underrated and that Teddy Riley production is sonically spot on. I also think their βI Like the Wayβ is the greatest early-β90s elementary school dance jam of all time!

Such a killer post-β90s Unplugged! I interviewed Chris for my MTV Unplugged podcast and he told some really cool stories about Dashboardβs Unplugged episode and album. If you give it a spin I hope you dig it!
