Anyone watched the UK horror movie "Raging Grace"? I felt compelled to watch this as it centres on a Filipina mother who works as a housekeeper for a white British woman & her uncle. I don't usually watch anything horror (This was my first!) but I thought it was really good. #philippines #ESEA #UK

Suggested stories (provided by Google and the Age) on my phone about expensive housing in Melbourne were associated under the "Melbourne" and "sport" tags.

Nice to know that our internet overlords think that buying expensive housing in Melbourne is a sport. I mean, for the working class, it isn't exactly wrong these days. But I don't need my phone to rub it in my face! #realestate #expensive #australia #housing #aupol #auspol #technology #melbourne

I've tried the one with the pili nuts before and that was yummy.

True. Yeah, some dress materials do seem like piΓ±a. I just had a thought that this hat & the hat from the black outfit with the gold pattern on the jacket collar (Brocade? Not sure.) could be made from sinamay, which is finished abaca aka Manila hemp. I know that fancy hats are made from sinamay.

I really only get a Filipiniana vibe from this specific outfit from A Knight's Tale. The top half reminds me of the camisa and panuelo from the traditional Maria Clara outfit.

It's like a nutty vanilla flavour, which is why it's used in a lot of desserts rather than in savoury foods. My favourite Filipino dessert with ube in it is "ube hopia" (like a filled mooncake, a sort of a pastry), if you can find fresh ube hopia (a lot of hopia is frozen), it's amazing.

Because sadly, there are still a lot of xenophobic racists who live in country towns and even in regional cities (Ask me how I know!).

Not that surprised. I'm mixed Southeast Asian Australian and a lot of white Australians I've spoken to seem to think that Asia is just East Asia plus Bali. They forget the rest of Asia exists.

*Correction: That second spelling should be "schemozzle". I made a mess of that one (or you could say, a shemozzle!).

Aussie here. As with a lot of slang terms, "shemozzle" (can also be spelt like "schmezzole") came to Australia & New Zealand via the UK. But interestingly, "shemozzle" is of Yiddish origin. It's a wonder it never crossed the pond over to the US. www.writerscentre.com.au/blog/qa-the-...

Food question: has anyone used culantro (sawtooth coriander, serrated coriander) in Filipino dishes before? I love coriander (cilantro) usually & I read that culantro has a more concentrated coriander (cilantro) taste. #philippines #filipinofood #pinoyfood

Destanee Aiava is 100% correct. The tennis world (& to be honest, so many other sports) need to be more inclusive. I feel for the Pacific Islander kids who will miss seeing her since she was one of the few current Pasifika tennis players. Wishing you the best for the future Destanee! #australia #aus

If this person doesn't make food from different Asian cuisines much, then she should try to buy smaller bottles. But yeah, once you have the ingredients, it's easy to keep making food from East & Southeast Asian cuisines. She has to make a point to prioritise using the ingredients if she buys them.

Sawsawan (Filipino Vinegar Dipping Sauce) | Iankewks Sawsawan is a Filipino vinegar-based dip that brightens up dishes with a sharp, tangy flavor. This is traditionally paired with grilled or fried foods to offset the heaviness and richness of the meal.

Filipinos make vinegar based dipping sauces (called "sawsawan") for lumpia, meat and grilled & fried foods. This recipe is for a soy sauce & vinegar dipping sauce.

Watching ABC News & racists calling for a "2nd Cronulla riot" & a "Cronulla reawakening" is abhorrent. We didn't need it 20 years ago & we don’t need that now! It was upsetting to see anti-immigration (& anti-First Nations) marches on January 26th. It's disgusting! #australia #aupol #auspol

No worries. Filipino Champorado is actually derived from Mexican champurrado (the Mexican influence is due to Spain's ruling of the Philippines from their base in Mexico & the trade route between Acapulco & Manila) but the masa was replaced with rice. Filipino tamales derived from Mexico too.

I caught the end of this. I'm disappointed that they didn't have an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander singer included in the 'I Am Australian' song. Having said that, I didn't know who one of the young ladies were, so she could've been for all I know.

Australia Day wasn’t always January 26, but it was always an issue Australia Day has not always been celebrated on January 26, and the meaning of the date has been contested historically and today.

For context, Australia Day wasn't celebrated by every Aussie state & territory uniformly until 1994. "Australia Day" being celebrated on January 26th (the day James Cook landed in Botany Bay NSW) has happened since 1935 but it wasn't every state that did so.

Australia Day as a national holiday is younger than me. I was born in the early 90s (A lady never discloses her age!). But Australia Day only became a national holiday in 1994. It's not traditional nor should it have been. Australia should be acknowledging our Indigenous history & change the date!

Filipinos make a soy sauce & vinegar dipping sauce with garlic & chili to go with their lumpia (recipe below). You can have it with meat also. Otherwise you could have lumpia with a Filipino spiced vinegar or a good quality soy sauce or a sweet chili sauce.

Filipino Champorado is made with rice rather than cornmeal. The only cornmeal dish from the Philippines I found were "binaki" which are sweet tamales. Filipino style tamales are usually made with ground rice rather than cornmeal. I have had champorado before but not Filipino tamales or binaki.

You throw religion & wanting white adjacency into the mix & that just gives them all the more reason to wilfully ignore the corruption. Because they think those things will make them "safe" & they don't want to think about how bad things really are if they don't believe in the "safety" of that. /4

corruption, what about the violence & corruption in the US? In "their own backyard"? Because that's where they are now, that's where they chose to be. How can they help FilAms from being harmed by ICE? There's no problem because they don't see it. If they can't see the problem, they're "safe". /3

I can believe that there are FilAms wilfully ignoring what's going on at all & that's just as bad as well. Believing that things are "the way they are" is how bad situations like this get worse (as is if it's not already bad there now!). Filipinos in the Philippines have been protesting about.../2
