it's ridiculous that she did that but i'll be charitable and say that i understand part of the intent: you have 90 days to reach as many eyeballs as possible, if not hearts. flooding our visual space with kamala's face made a certain kind of desperate sense. were there better uses for the money? idk
and even when the package is right in front of you, people may still reject the label because what the package contains is a bunch of random stuff that people think of as cool. oh here's batman and breaking bad and some anime and a stealth bomber, then it's "why do liberals hate fun."
this really cuts to why it's such a struggle to get people to take the rise in fascism seriously. there's no obvious procedural tell like a democracy (voting) or symbolic tell like a monarchy (a king). it's a package and you don't recognize package as such until it's already been assembled.
imo cliches catch a bad rap mostly because they are mainly discussed in the context of literature, where the kind of people who read for pleasure gravitate toward surprise and subversion. but the main point of a cliche is really sociological: to serve as what we might call 'pocket wisdom'.
also "the two cultures cannot coexist peacefully" and "readers need to speak the truth in love" uhhh is "in love" a euphemism for punches
when you want religious historian cred but you have to write blubbering propaganda to pay for your 3rd mercedes, you're erik erikson
a ghibli film about two strangers making the best out of a survival situation might actually be pretty dope. but the AI slop, burn it with fire.
this is what makes most trump discourse so maddening. people are mostly debating Trump, The Idea and ignoring Trump, The Man. everyone needs trump to represent something, and while he factors that into his performance, he's still the narcissistic new york playboy who loves musical theater.
when ben shapiro complained about WAP, his huffy medical framing - "my doctor wife said she never gets that wet" - was silly not only in the implied self-own, but also in sidestepping his real point: public perversion is supposed to incur punishment. but the rules of prudishness no longer apply.
in a culture where prudishness has social currency, there is value in ostentatious displays of purity as well as the monitoring of others' 'carnal failings'. this also has the effect of making perversion riskier and thus more thrilling. a lot of MAGA is a haphazard attempt to reimpose this model.
key thing here is that prudishness and perversion are two sides of the same coin for right-wingers. prudishness is a performance done to ostensibly quell their perversions, but mainly to create a culture where perversion can fester in private and be weaponized if it bubbles to the surface.
as a staight, one thing straight couples do that bums me out is walking in each other's proximity, but not really together. almost always, the man is walking stone-faced in front of his wife and she's trailing behind. there's no talking, no interaction, just Gender hanging in the space between them.
unfortunately that is exactly why trans kids were selected and equally why we have to stand up for them. we shrunk the plate that conservatives get to eat from at their minority group abuse buffet and so they've settled on the smallest dish that will still satisfy their ravenous bigotry.
I feel like one follow-up question - "what do you mean by undone?" - would cause these ghouls to experience the Scanners' head burst
It's funny because her husband and Cory have a similar look, suggesting that's her type, but I guess Noem was just more attracted to a man who was like "shut up and let me run DHS broad" versus "go get those illegals, honey bunny!"
If we were honest with ourselves, it would have been obvious that the guy saying "we just should have taken the oil" wanted to turn us into a gangster petrostate
there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for
I would feed sandwich a little sandwich every day
It's darkly funny that Qanon was essentially an acknowledgement that elites can be motivated by sadism and then its adherents used that to justify voting for the most sadistic among us.
You can't not elaborate on this
trump taking one of those "which Disney character are you" quizzes and his phone just explodes
weird how nobody talks about the nakedly socialist state with a tiny military and abortion on demand, Saudi Arabia
Maybe I just played it at the wrong time in my life but I thought that Darksiders game was aggressively boring. Never felt inclined to give it a second chance, just gonna be prejudiced.
As I followed up, I think it's natural that someone who works in public health will be more rhetorically restrained and focused on sympathetic problem-solving. This is very different from wanting anti-vax ideas to spread, which is how people are reading him. bsky.app/profile/shim...
Two things are true at once:
1) the anti-vax movement is led by frauds and eugenicists who need to be turned into pariahs.
2) your average public health official interfaces with lots of regular people, many of whom hold incoherent beliefs, and will focus on them first. this is fine.
local microblogging platform users continue their beloved tradition of yelling at natural allies because internet discourse standards have poisoned them into reading uncharitably (if at all) and thinking that abrasive scolding is the One True Rhetorical Style
It does strike me as a classic case of "an old artist making something for themselves, with all the inscrutable sentimentality that entails" but that just means it's ripe for analysis!
Thanks for articulating why this movie feels so weird to me lol. I need to give it another shake but when I saw it in theaters I was like "this is so lovely also who tf is this character did I miss something"
