Popular discourse attributes falling college enrollments to the rising cost of four-year college.
That story is wrong in multiple ways, as @mattbarnum.bsky.social points out in his latest roundup of the evidence (citing a new working paper of ours):

A new consultation pact which follows the formation of several other alliances in the past two years. I remember BdM talking about how the making/breaking of alliances was a sign of systemic instability ๐ง

Trumpโs trip to Asia mostly resulted in promises and flattery. But promises alone donโt guarantee follow-throughโand thatโs often where Trumpโs deals break down.

Systematic execution of hundreds in a hospital in Darfur, as RSF/Janjaweed take over the city of El Fasher (population ~250k) in Darfur.
That adds to an estimated 150,000+ death toll from fighting, plus many more from famine.
But Sudan is one of those places the outside world cares little about.
Even as someone who has become a bit less skeptical of AI overall, and probably less skeptical than the average person on this site, this absolutely has to be a bright line. If there are ethical uses of AI, grading is not and will not be one of them.

I wrote about embracing failures almost a decade ago and I described my shadow CV that tracks them. I agree that we must train young scholars to handle rejections, an important part of the academic career. Good tips from @catherinedevries.bsky.social

Semesterly reminder to everyone - Canvas in many cases defaults to showing students the course's grade distribution and student's place on it.
If you *don't* want your students to be aware of where they "rank" at all times, take a second to double check it's turned off.

IR Book of the Week!
"War and Power" by @phillipspobrien.bsky.social. Book argues that the focus on what makes nations "Great Powers" has led to a skewed our understanding of the true sources of power, particularly in the context of war.

Glorifying violence or harm violates Blueskyโs Community Guidelines. We review reports and take action on content that celebrates harm against anyone. Violence has no place in healthy public discourse, and weโre committed to fostering healthy, open conversations
๐จ๐จHey #polisky job market folks! My former colleagues at Lafayette are hiring two positions:
American/public law (provost.lafayette.edu/2025-26-gov-...)

It's that time of the year to discuss our fabulous candidates on the academic job market from the Department of Political Science at the University of Iowa! /1
Yes, being a faculty member is a hard job. I always tell my PhD students when they get jobs that teaching two (or more) classes a semester will be very tiring. Performance is a good analogy. Itโs also one of the most rewarding jobs one could ever have.
Watch our Community Partnership panel with
@mattlamb.bsky.social and Jennifer Jackman. We discuss how you can seize opportunities in the community, align your goals, and encourage student involvement.

Just one study, but supports the value of learning to think/write on your own first.
Might also help convince students that the best performers wrote on their own first, then later with AI, while those who started off doing both did poorly & limited future capacity.
