Yeah, TOS is really a product of its time, sci-fi was more or less fantasy, the aesthetics were post-50's derived. The stories were sci-fi fantasy, the moral "lessons" heavy handed. Good sci-fi for Trek doesn't start until Season 3 of TNG.

The first three Shannara books are some of the best high adventure fantasy books (post-tolkein) there are. The series floundered a bit until Druid of Shannara, then fell off again until Ilse Witch, after that it gets watered down again. I think Wishsong is his best novel...

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders why they're showing the 2 year old slop heavy models at GDC this week. I think it's because with the new ones, people aren't able to tell the difference now that they do subtext, conflict, pacing and rhythm rather than just filling space.

My guess is that at some point in his character arc we'll see why he doesn't want to give him a second chance, likely due to something he has done in his past in which he thought he didn't deserve another chance as well and is projecting that on Langdon.
