Remember that they were Swiss. That is their expression when they thinking: 1. that is way cool; AND 2. I wonder how Victorinox can put that onto a knife.

My dad, who escaped from Germany in 1938, would not find this graphic funny, but he'd far prefer it to our current reality

A company that made its name regurgitating and recombining sliced-up bits of intellectual property in statistically probable ways (sometimes verging on plagiarism) without due compensation is now β¦ whining about . another company apparently doing the same, at lower cost.
Garrett Epps has a remarkably clear explanation of the issues surrounding Trump's efforts to end birthright citizenship. Even this plant physiologist could follow it.

I'm confused. What did Colombia gain in terms of concessions from the US?
Query to sciencey folks: We noticed yesterday that NSF moved its Bio Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship Program web page from <active> to <archived>. Have they paused/ended the program? Was this planned? Is it in response to an directive from on high, or is NSF leadership showing initiative?
βPost-mortem studies of human brains provide direct evidence that numerous pollutants β including nanoparticles and toxic metals β accumulate in brain tissue.β
Interesting article by @liamdrew.bsky.social as an overview of PM pollution & growing research on brain effects like tau tangles, etc.
Just received news that we had a paper rejected. The reviewers found a potentially important error. They suggested that once we fix the mistake we should consider resubmitting. The Editor's letter was critical but constructive

I spent my first 12 professor-years teaching in a school with a high proportion of students from the bottom quintile. The math/science ones wanted to be doctors not professors because of the perceived economic advantages: more money and less risk. I can't say they were wrong
FYI: I have been studying essential oils for over 30 years. They have, in effect, paid for my cars, house, kids' tuitions, and medical bills from too much sniffing.
I was a green asst. prof at sunysb many years ago. Now im at UVA but happy to revive the project we put on hold when you joined the NYT, "Economic thinking in ecological models."

A screenshot of a social media post from USFWSPacific that reads: "SHE DID IT AGAIN! Wisdom, the worldβs oldest known wild bird, is back with a new partner and just laid yet another egg. At an approximate age of 74, the queen of seabirds returned to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge last week and began interacting with a male." This tweet is paired with an image of two Laysan Albatrosses at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Wisdom, the oldest known wild bird, is shown alongside her new partner, demonstrating her enduring legacy as a remarkable seabird.
We humbly interrupt your scroll to bring you the news that Wisdomβthe world's oldest known wild birdβis breeding again, age 74.
Go on girl. π
18 years ago this month I left the Ecology&Evolution Dept. at SUNY-StonyBrook to move to UVA. Today, my eldest child pointed out that I still have not returned Doug Futuyma's pliers. Good thing his initials are on them; otherwise I wouldn't know whom they belonged to

They used funnel inkpad funnel cages to test this. the map seemed worse than the compass. /end
and banded small birds as part of their efforts to understand eastern migrants coming up west coast. there seem to be two groups, ones who head up/down the intermountain west and get blown over (few) and ones who have their maps/compasses flipped and aim N/S W when they should head N/S E. /2
very nice pic. yes to b&w warbler. range map is correct, AND sitings are real. those few points on ebird represent a small fraction of total along west coast (based on banding data, more below) but a MUCHMUCHMUCH smaller fraction of total population. Before grad school I worked at PRBO in Bolinas /1
Since I tend toward being narrow-minded and ignorant, I often do not know of cool things beyond my wheelhouse. For example, I just learned of this blog, which has become my favorite blog by a scientist. She is smart, interesting, and writes in a way that even naifs can enjoy. deevybee.blogspot.com
I just had an ENTIRE 6th GRADE CLASS email me with questions about ancient Egypt because their teacher *assigned them to do it.* What in the actual fresh hell? Teachers, there is this magical place called a LIBRARY, full of BOOKS, which have WORDS and KNOWLEDGE. Do your job. Mine ain't this.
