The Harry Enten fall-off is genuinely v. sad to see

Not quite sure how you'd set it up, but would be interesting to see a study of whether players above a certain career minutes threshold performed at a higher level in the first full post-covid season.

Brandon Sproat is the name of a Saul Bellow protagonist. Or maybe Salinger?

what level of Cool Zone is the former central banker president of Canada giving a speech at Davos where he says the entire system of international trade and finance has ruptured and the majority of nations must now reshape their economic and international policies

He was writing a book about the Carter-era energy crisis when covid happened - he should just go back to doing that! Although obviously less lucrative (and harder!) than substacking every day

I think I get it more from O'Neil's side - chance to show something different to firefighting at the bottom of the PL, and he has a legit shot at winning a European trophy this year! Feel like BlueCo could've found someone better but imagine availability played a big role here

Yeah I really don't think the BlueCo --> Chelsea manager pipeline is as cute as the Rosenior appointment might suggest. Gary O'Neil taking his job is so far down the list of things he should be worrying about.

Trying to think of examples where managers have succeeded at doing this. Klopp obviously comes to mind but that was a bit of an exceptional case and didn't last. And similarly Tuchel at Chelsea, although as it turned out he actually didn't want the responsibility

Oh so the obvious answer here is The Killer Angels - absolutely perfect as a highbrow kids read.

I would really like Chelsea to resolve this in a manner that helps them to win more football matches, but also:

when Jacques Lacan said, "Desire full stop is always the desire of the Other", meaning that desire is premised on the attainment of an impossible object, a wholeness which can never be achieved, he was actually talking about sports fans

This is a good video and Lander is a good guy who seems like a lock for the seat, but funny that you can really tell the difference between him and a generational talent like Zohran

I feel reasonably convinced that the "Nigel Farage aide" part is doing a lot to make this a big story, rather than the "Tony Bloom had a kind of weird arrangement with regulators so he could keep running his gambling syndicate" part.

Also a classic case of: an increase to my salary is one I've earned and deserve for being good at my job, but any correlated increase in cost of living is entirely the fault of the economy and or incumbent govt.

I have read (and liked) Mokyr's Enlightened Economy, on the link between industrialisation and British intellectual movements, but can't speak to the paper that actually won the Nobel

This had nothing to do with FFP - we're talking basically immaterial amounts of money to Chelsea's overall finances here. More accurately the sale was just a way to get him game time without using up a loan spot - but once Guiu got recalled that didn't matter, hence the loan to Swansea instead.

Yeah I agree that they are not identical and there's a fair bit of subtle differentiation to be made, but interesting that both ultimately connote a lack of technical quality and a kind of basic, rudimentary approach to the game
