I think the big thing is just that there are so many shot events that tracking anything else gives you marginal gains. Micah McCurdy does stuff with “setting” (the quality of a passer assisting a shot) that I think is close to what you imagine

There has been research into territory threat based models, but my understanding is that it wasn’t as strongly correlated with winning as raw shot attempts, let alone a good xG model. Some people swear by zone entries and exits but I don’t know how they incorporate it into their models

With how much Carolina loved Ferland, I think Brady makes more sense since he’s basically rich man’s Ferland. In that universe they probably trade off some forwards for a D. I like their current D corps though. Miller pickup was huge for them
