It's commonplace for other countries to purchase USD and debt instruments to curry favor with the US, avoid tariffs, offset cost of mil deployments and aid, etc. Cheaper to buy some T coin and enrich one person and his cronies than subsidize an entire country! #quarterjoking

2nd: having nukes (even threatening to get them) makes war less likely to stay limited (recall Lindsay Graham in 2017 saying that if "if thousands die, they're going to die over there"), increases great power (not just US) incentive to restrain all parties and step in if s%!?* hits the fan
I don't think there's outright consensus among proponents, but I've encountered 2 sets of related arguments, v. similar to UK (and to some extent FR): 1) existential deterrence; 2) entrapment. First, own nukes sub for lost conventional and nuclear retaliatory capability should US abandon them
