AI does not enhance β€œefficiency.” AI is a permission structure for a totalizing regime of austerity and labor immiseration.

Behold: the first-ever list of news outlets that have banned generative AI in their reporting. As of today, this is literally information that you cannot find on Google.

My goal is to fill the starter pack, so please send over suggestions with supporting evidence!

This is a common reply to concerns about GenAI research as if it were just another computational tool that saves us times from tedious tasks and whose accuracy can be rigorously quantified.

It is not.

GenAI research poses at least 2 serious problems... /n

Oh they will! But by the time they do, they will have engineered it so that the journals use AI to do the 'peer review'...so it doesn't matter then. And it's already starting to happen with journals and start ups claiming it works well enough...

Interested in microbial proteins and their diversity? πŸ–₯️🧬🦠

We have recently released the Amino Acid Sequence Toolkit (AASTK). AASTK is designed to work with the GlobDB to create and work with datasets of protein sequences.

AASTK currently consists of 4 tools:
- CASM
- PASR
- CUGO
- Meta

@ox.ac.uk any chance you might rethink your collaboration with OpenAI and the free access to the edu version to all staff and students now?

I won't hold my breath.

The Protist 10,000 Genomes Project is joining the Earth BioGenome Project.
Protists may represent the majority of eukaryotic diversity β€” yet only a tiny fraction have reference genomes.
Time to change that. πŸš€βœ¨

Debates like β€œprogramming is dead,” β€œAI will automate X,” or the latest β€œvibe coding” trend all miss the point.

They treat complexity as something we can engineer awayβ€”instead of recognizing the ecological forces shaping software.

MicroSEA (Microbial Sea Eukaryotes) course is a one-week, field-based summer school to train early-career researchers in the diversity, ecology, and single-cell biology of marine protists. MicroSEA course integrates lectures, field sampling, and lab-based practicals in advanced techniques, such as flow cytometry, microscopy, culturing, and molecular analysis.

The main objectives of MicroSEA course are:

Fostering a deep understanding of marine protist diversity, ecology and biology;
Providing hands-on training in advanced single-cell methods that are not commonly available in university programs;
Building participants' confidence in designing and conducting research projects from field to data analysis;
Promoting international collaborations and peer networking among students and speakers/trainers.
The course will take place at the Station Biologique de Roscoff - SBR (France) - 7th to 12th of June, 2026 (arrival on the 6th, departure on the 13th).

20 participants will be selected, including 10 from EuroMarine member institutes.
