One fascinating echo between the Highland Park Way discussion and the Pioneer Square bike corral discussion is the idea that SDOT trying to do two things at once (create a bike lane, improve driver safety) somehow makes the project *more* suspect and open to criticism.
I remember biking down this hill with my kid on the back of the bike. I didn't feel comfortable riding in the road so we took the sidewalk. But the sidewalk was covered in wet slippery leaves and so we had to get off & walk. There is so much excess road capacity here. Build the bike lane, SDOT.
I'm listening into this meeting and am quite frustrated by what I'm hearing from callers; "why punish the 95% of good drivers by making them drive slower?"
People have died here numerous times.
Despite the fact that I don't live in West Seattle and rarely go there except (not very often) to visit friends, I have biked and walked up this hill enough times that I can't recall the exact number. It was abysmal, loud and terrifying every time.
One of these options is safer than the other. JUST ADVANCE THAT ONE
design shows bike lane stopping well short of the intersection
design showing the bike lane extending to the intersection with a break for the bus stop
The presentation was pre-recorded and showed up fairly blurry on Zoom, but here are the two options as I captured them.

Tuned into a meeting tonight on the Highland Park Way SW bike connection, one of the flagship bike projects in the transportation levy.
Super frustrating to hear that SDOT is presenting 2 options, one of which ends the downhill-only bike lane way well before Marginal Way to maintain traffic flow.

Community Drop-In Session: Bike & Scooter Parking in Pioneer Square The Seattle Department of Transportation is responding to transportation safety concerns in Pioneer Square by shifting shared bikes and scooters from being misparked on sidewalks to No Parking areas as well as designated sidewalk corrals. The number of shared bike and scooter trips to Pioneer Square has almost doubled in the past two years. But bike and scooter parking hasn't kept up. Providing on-street bike corrals in No Parking areas near intersections also helps to increase visibility for travelers. The project aims to retain vehicle load zones and parking capacity, while being responsive to neighborhood character. Join us for a drop-in session to: β’ Review proposed locations β’ Compare potential design options β’ Share feedback and local insights This is an opportunity to help shape how bike and scooter parking could look and function in the neighborhood. RailSpur, 419 Occidental Ave S, Seattle, WA 98104 Monday, March 16, 2026 4:30-6:00pm - drop in anytime
Do you walk on sidewalks and hate how scooters are everywhere?
Are you tired of crossing the street lined to the edge with parked cars & almost getting hit by a driver saying they βdidnβt see youβ?
What if I told you Pioneer Square can fix both of these things?

Two blocks is not enough. We want Alternative 5 plus everything within 1/2 mile of frequent transit AS A START.
That IS the βgradualβ approach.
Even this approach is too focused on business and not focused enough on families, parks, schools, etc.

Lincoln Park is so beautiful β we should really let more people live nearby!
Itβs also a Seattle park I never visited prior to having a carβ¦
The fact that landowners are fighting tooth and nail to prevent more people from living in the neighborhood is despicable.

An @theurbanist.org exclusive: the proposed budget advanced by House Democrats in Washington would fully eliminate the state's urban forestry program, significantly hindering the ability of local governments to access resources for tree canopy expansion.

What is this all about?? Let me try to explain. It's important, because it's actually about @seasocialhousing.bsky.social and it's about Alzheimer's and heart disease and asthma, and rich homeowners keeping you sick and housing rare and unaffordable. And what you can do about it THIS MONTH.
A detailed map of Seattle's Center City bike network, showing existing bike routes in solid green, future connections in dashed green, and routes under construction in dotted orange. A zoomed-in inset highlights the waterfront area near Yesler Way, which runs east-west and connects the waterfront (Alaskan Way) to the downtown core. Key streets like 1st Ave, Alaskan Way, and Yesler Way are labeled, along with landmarks such as Seattle Center and Elliott Bay.
This project fills a gap in Seattleβs City Center Bike Network & creates a much-anticipated, safer connection between Pioneer Square, downtown, and the waterfront.
Construction officially began this week with underground work, and more visible changes on the street will follow in the coming weeks.
A busy urban street. A cyclist wearing a white helmet and teal shirt riding a light-colored road bike is stopped behind a crosswalk. She is next to a white SUV.
Street view of Pioneer Square with historic brick buildings, a bike lane, crosswalk, and a 'STOP ALL WAY' sign. A pedestrian crosses as vehicles line the street.
Itβs happening! Yesler Way is getting a new protected bike lane from Occidental Ave S to the waterfront.
