An Edward Gorey drawing showing a morose looking black bird on a branch. He (and this feels very much like a he) is pointing downwards with one scraggly wing, and looking straight ahead with debt-filled eyes. His beak is long and sharp, like winter on the Great Plains. He is pointing with his right wing, but this means he is pointing to your left. Your wicked, sinister side. This is no accident. The Bird makes no such mistakes. But he is talking, and the text tells us that he is saying, "Beware of this and that."
Honestly, you feel his message in your bones.
Some days I just feel like this Edward Gorey bird gets it.

I just learned that Anthony Bourdain was 44 when he wrote the book that really launched everything we will remember him for.
Gonna remind myself of this whenever I feel like I'm getting too old to pursue anything new.

Young (er) Juan, circa 2013, wearing a Chelsea jacket, which was his first official gear from the team.
His first shirt would arrive later, that's a fascinating story...

That's the least fucked up part.
Apparently his mistress showed up at his grandpa's funeral (my father was raised by his grandparents).

Which is .... Questionable to say the least.
Tying yourself in a legally binding situation just so you'd church would look at you with more benevolent eyes is messed up.
*Yes, I was conceived out of wedlock. So, if someone were to call me a bastard, it wouldn't be an insult.

And naturally, she was constantly upset and hurt by that fact. I can remember seeing her crying when the mass got to the communion part because she couldn't participate in it.
I am convinced, a big part of the reason why my mother chose to marry my father was only so she could commune.

So why would my mother insists on reforming and marrying a guy like him?
You'll see. My mother is Catholic, very very catholic. And to catholics, commune is the biggest most important thing.
But guess what.... Since my parents were living in "sin"*, my mother couldn't commune.

My parents marriage. It didn't, and it does make sense.
My father has always been an "inadequate" partner. Since I can remember the consensus has always been that he does not deserve my mother.
From his alleged affair (never knew what really happened, and I prefer not to), to other stuff...

Technically it's Monday so it's way too early in the week to be doing rum shots...
But it was instigated by a bunch of church ladies, and in the name of my mom, so all's good.

As a child/kid/son, it warms my heart to see my mom's life being celebrated. She deserves as much.
Everything good that I am, or could ever aspire to be is because of her.
Happy birthday, mom!

A close up of an ornate gravestone featuring a crude drawing of a woman with droopy breasts.
It's #MementoMoriMonday, so I thought I'd share this absolutely wild gravestone of Prudence Hammond who died in 1711. It's located in Watertown, Massachusetts - and it's certainly... memorable!
