The finger on the scale goes bang bang bang Under the shade of the giant mushroom. The mushroom with the face of the moon. I know h leaving by three clicks of the front door lock, unlock, lock. Fifteen steps to the road where he'll turn left and I won't hear him anymore. Then I go in. The table is smeared with something purple. It smells sticky. Flies will find it soon, I hear thei making lazy formations by the cream-coloured siding until it's time to come in. The bathroon has the same old drip. He's probably used washer after washer like I did but you can't stop wat plink like a too-tight string. I see my face in the fat drops, round and glisteny. Her room with the circle door like a surprised mouth is down the short, skinny hall. I fold through it, lift knees, hunch shoulders, head in like a turtle. It makes her laugh every time. It's not my fault I'm tall and this door is made for hobbits. You're the hobbit she says between laugh She calls me Hobbit when he comes home and he thinks she has an imaginary friend. He thin I'm not real. She insists I am and I hear them fight from the garden but there's nothing I can d He clomps irritated and bored down the skinny hall to the dark room with the enormous TV. She chatters to herself through the night, it sounds like windchimes and hummingbirds. He thinks shell snap out of it one day. He sheds parched skin flakes as he brings her soup and car rots. She sweeps them with her hands and makes miniature hims to play with and he wonder why he tickles and twitches and laughs for no reason. He thinks he's in charge. He thinks she came w the house like a chandelier or trapdoor. Anyway she never leaves her room an the pri is rig the realtor had said. If she Is for me I toss clouds at her window so she'll know I'm near. When she's bore of m dream for lays. The sun is never where I expect it to be. Then I hear the lock, unlock nock, ta fifteen steps and I unfurl through her door. I see she's bored of him. The house will be for sale …
