Reminds me of that famous passage in Mark where Jesus tells his disciples to love thy neighbour as long as it doesn't get in the way of trusting leaders blindly and murdering innocent children from sh1thole countries. Or is that in Luke? For some odd reason I can't find the quote at the moment.

I believe it was Abraham Lincoln who called upon us to rededicate ourselves "to the great task remaining before us . . . that government of the rich, by the evil, for the idiots shall not perish from the earth."

Invisible Franco-Americans The Franco-American historical narrative is built on a certain kind of community to which visibility came easily.

🚨 NEW! 🚨

We all know about Lowell and Manchester. But Amador, #California? Maybe not so much, though it too should find a place in our mental map of Franco-America.

Let's travel (and meet a murderess).

Rene Charland: The Fastest Franco-American Rene Charland was a tough competitor on the track, but it was his cheery, playful persona that helped make his reputation.

Well, a new #Nascar season is upon us—the perfect opportunity to remember the fastest #FrancoAmerican. This guy would not settle for "a petit pain."

St. Johnsbury and the Two New Englands St. Johnsbury's experience with immigration turns the story of modernization and "clannishness" on its head.

🚨 New on QTP 🚨

In the 1890s, St. Johnsbury was no longer “exclusively historical” because of its French fact—a French fact that was dragging the “bright, progressive” Anglo-Saxons into a new world.

"[T]he Association Canado-Américaine awarded her its Prix littéraire for her Laurentian Heritage, an overview of life in nineteenth-century Quebec."

A glimpse of a then well-known, now little-remembered author who also advocated for people with disabilities.

Apparently we should be boycotting 'Melania' not b/c it is propaganda, but b/c it's just bad—rated 1.3 on IMDb (or below 'Gigli'). Best synopsis: "She wears heels and has conversations." But props to the person who gave it a 10 and claimed that Melania "work[s] tirelessly for the American people."

RED ALERT

Monty Python's Meaning of Life is now on Netflix. I repeat, the best Monty Python movie is now on Netflix.

Also, I guess this is a good moment to apologize to folks to whom I have been sending Mr. Creosote GIFs for almost 20 years.

Cooperation and Competition: Agricultural Fairs in Quebec The spirit of cooperation and competition of annual fairs propelled Quebec agriculture and promoted its value among non-farmers.

“There are shows and booths here of all sorts and descriptions,” one observer explained, “from the ‘greatest curiosity of the world’ to a ‘penny peep;’ and, as may naturally be supposed, there is a perfect Babel of tongues.”
