Interesting discussion... I've been grappling with whether to code political speech 'at face value' as it's the easiest to operationalize yet invites trouble since people don't usually subscribe to those accounts themselves. And if we code the connotations, it's hard to ascertain its validity

Adding to my reading list for Political Behavior. I wonder how this relates to the 'reactive ethnicity' literature, at first glance it reminds me of it

Final week strikes again. Not sure if I should plan for a restful winter break or seize the rare block of uninterrupted time and get more work done…

I’m currently studying this using survey data and (hopefully interview data in the future)! Esp those against illegal immigration who are immigrant themselves. Maybe I could report back when I’m done with my analysis…

Heavy news these days. There’s some kind of ancient magic in the tides of Coronado Island that calms my mind.

If you don’t use Evernote for a few years, your account (and data) will be deleted by them. So I don’t recommend keeping Evernote as the long term place of storage.

Also, I think both Evernote and Notion (and perhaps other notes apps) can export and import in β€˜Markdown & CSV’ format!!

I would definitely keep them as records! I have imported Evernote files into my current Notion ecosystem and it worked seamlessly

Unlike ASA, I'll have more time to share the cool methodology behind the findings. I construct a revised index to measure immigration attitudes, and explain why β€˜anti-immigration immigrant’ is not as paradoxical as it seems.

The event is hybrid & open to the public. Come say hi, wherever you are 🫑

I'll be sharing my paper at Harvard's β€œMigration & Immigrant Incorporation” Workshop on Sep 30.

This is (to my knowledge) the first to merge 13 waves of the Pew National Survey of Latinos.

I traced TWENTY years of trends in (anti)-immigration attitudes among Hispanic Americans. Join me!

Book Review: In Our Interest - Ann Jiang, 2025

Read it here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

I talk about how In Our Interest reframes the politics of immigration by focusing on altruistic nationalism.

🚨 My review of In Our Interest: How Democracies Can Make Immigration Popular is forthcoming (!) in International Migration Review. The book is just out, by @akoustov.bsky.social, and offers a bold take on migration politics. I look up to his work, so it feels unreal that IMR asked me to review it.
