The picture shows an impressive gorge landscape, which is the Arribes del Duero Natural Park. This region is located on the border between Spain and Portugal. The Duero flows through the valley, which has cut deep into the granite rock over millions of years, forming steep gorges known as "Arribes".
The slopes are covered with Mediterranean vegetation, including juniper, oak and, in the lower areas, often olive and almond trees.
In the background, a bridge can be seen spanning the deep gorges, as well as fortifications and retaining walls on the slopes. The area is known as a special protection area for birds, especially griffon vultures, golden eagles and black storks.

A black and white shot of a man with long white hair tied back in a pony tail is sat on a stone bench in Prestwich town centre. He is totally engrossed in his mobile phone and has a drink's can and glasses case beside him. He is sat beneath two silver birch trees whose bare skeleton branches frame the top of the shot. Part of the 'fountain' can be seen in the background looking out to the main road into Manchester

The age of elegance in Prague’s Grand Hotel Europa.

I plucked up the courage to go in as a student 30+ years ago and loved its faded grandeur. Now newly renovated but thankfully the glorious Art Nouveau jewels are preserved, just shining a little brighter.

Maybe the most spectacular church interior I’ve seen is Kaunas Cathedral, in Lithuania’s 2nd largest city. The outside isn’t as impressive as many I’ve seen, but the inside…

The image shows a rectangular Roman dice tower (turricula) made of four copper alloy (bronze) plates with punched cut-out Latin letters and cut-out decorative patterns. At the bottom front is a stepped exit chute with small bronze bells attached to the opening. The tower is a Roman anti-cheating device. It has an open top and is hollow inside except for three staggered, downward-sloping plates, designed to randomize dice as they fall, ensuring unpredictable dice rolls. When the dice rolled out of the exit chute they rang the bells! There is a decorative dolphin either side of the stepped exit chute. The top of the front plate has two decorative pine cone finials. Height 25 cm. There is a single die shown next to the stepped base to illustrate how it was used.

The front inscription reads:
PICTOS VICTOS
HOSTIS DELETA
LVDITE SECVRI

Translated as: β€˜The Picts defeated, the enemy has been destroyed, play in safety’.

Around the top of the three remaining sides, a second inscription made with cut out letters reads:

β€˜UTERI/FELIX/VIVAS’ translated as β€˜Use happily; may you live well’.

Found at a Roman villa at Froitzheim in Germany in 1985.

Roman anti-cheating gaming accessory!

This Roman β€˜turricula’ (dice tower) was used to ensure a fair roll of the dice! 🎲🎲🎲

Dice dropped into the top, tumbled over sloping internal levels, and appeared randomly below.

The Chinese House in Sanssouci Park, Potsdam is widely regarded as the finest surviving example of chinoiserie architecture in Europe. Built between 1755 and 1764 it was commissioned by Frederick the Great as an intimate summer dining pavilion and personal retreat.

The building rises on a trefoil floor plan, its rounded central rotunda crowned by a sweeping tent-like copper roof in aged verdigris green. Above the cupola, a gilded figure of a Mandarin holding a parasol, modelled loosely on Confucius, catches the light and anchors the composition. Arched and French windows reaching nearly to the ground are framed by free-standing colonnades shaped as gilded palm trees with frond-like capitals. These extraordinary columns, radiating gold against the mint-green walls, were designed to transport visitors far beyond the borders of Prussia.
Life-size gilded sandstone populate every niche, depicted eating, drinking tea, and making music.

Chinoiserie as Architectural Fashion
Chinoiserie emerged in 17th-century Europe when Dutch traders flooded aristocratic markets with Chinese lacquerware, porcelain, and silk. By the mid-18th century it had grown into a full cultural obsession, intertwining naturally with the Rococo style, both sharing exuberant decoration, asymmetry, and a delight in leisure as a subject. The fashion began in France, where Louis XIV had already commissioned the Trianon de Porcelaine at Versailles in 1670, before sweeping through England, Germany, and Russia.
Crucially, chinoiserie was never a faithful representation of actual Chinese culture. It reflected Europeans’ idealized fantasy of a carefree, refined Oriental world, one that harmonized perfectly with the Rococo ideal of elegant, cultivated pleasure.

The building stands not as an ethnographic document, but as a monument to one of the most seductive cross-cultural fantasies in Western architectural history.

Frederick the Great’s Chinese House (1764) in Sanssouci Park embodies chinoiserie, 18th-century Europe’s Rococo fantasy of the Orient. Gilded palm columns, golden figures, and a parasol-crowned cupola, exoticism the ultimate architectural fashion.

Vertical view of interior of Solvay Library in Brussels featuring a gigantic hall in eclectic style with precious-wood dΓ©cor and bookshelves, an upstairs balcony area, mosaics and coloured stained glass windows. A woman crossing the hall adds a dimension of the place.
The Solvay Library, the magnificent setting of the former Institute of Sociology, was created under the impulse of Ernest Solvay and built by the architects Constant Bosmans and Henri Vandeveld. Inaugurated in 1902, the Solvay Institute of Sociology is one of the most prestigious remains of the Leopold Park. Abandoned and vandalized for several years, this listed building was restored to its former glory in 1995 after a restoration campaign led by the architects Deleuze and Metzger. After having hosted researchers from all over the world, it is now a place for private and cultural events.
