inspired by Utena, Phil Hine for some reason, Nabokov's worst and best book (Ada or Ardor), Nancy Mitford (duhhhhh), HOT MOMS. why's this self indulgent? first of all, confused preteen lesbian crushes on sinister Russian princes. but also i'm one of the authors. shhhh
back at it again at the krispy kreme!!! here's a self-indulgent rec: UNCOMMON CHARM, a pastiche of chatty domestic tragicomedies a la PURSUIT OF LOVE.

Custom deckled edges, the parrot's imprimatur
all birds rebel against God, righteously so, but they must respect that this is a place of peace (Bert is smaller than them). If an ayam cemani came in though I'd probably empty the register
Brainstorming store rules. Dogs strictly forbidden but birds allowed, if leashed

this is Bert he does our finances and he isn't good at it
at my last store someone who wanted true crime about gacy bought this instead, understanding me to be Ghoul on Staff per my recommendation, but they returned it the next day for being too dark.
sorry you thought about the scientific legitimization of a flawed social construct idk what to tell you
today's recommendation: @libraryatnight.bsky.social 's DARK ARCHIVES, a history of books bound in human skin. Not a grisly wannabe-shocker catalogue but an EXTREMELY accessible work on material culture and the medicalization of race and criminality
anyway you can buy it at our affiliate link. and you should.
sometimes bookshop is like did you mean this other different bookstore? NO. you meant dark matter bookshop.org/a/105152/978...
my other favorite thing, not mentioned often: kirstein knows the human body is fragile, and she writes frankly about what can and does happen. description is brief but vivid. it would be standard fantasy violence otherwise. i dunno man sometimes "death," "bombs," etc. are abstract concepts to people
is there information that would compromise or shame you? what if saying it just HURTS? rowan has to weigh the pursuit of truth against her friendships frequently... so even banal questions require the careful assessment of what she owes to other people.
is that steerswomen come up against genuine ethical problems in pursuit of truth! ask a steerswoman anything and she'll answer with the truth; refuse to answer HER questions or lie and you're forbidden to ask a steerswoman ever again. immediately: so... is some information too dangerous to know?
we love backlist, books that play with genre conventions, and characters who constantly reassess the things they owe to others so we love Rosemary Kirstein's THE STEERSWOMAN. the "Big Twist" is that it's seemingly-fantasy then actually SF, but what *i* love about it...

I've seen him in all manner of attire, and sensual besides. But as of yet no Alf Cock
This is not true because living in the modern world means you're complicit in a panoply of horrors. Still hitting Meagan w hammers
There's just two of us, we're both prior booksellers, and incorporating a business made us cringe. Right now the only labor abuses we can commit are to each other... that's Romance! I'm gonna hit Meagan with hammers
let's go! eat it, nancy!!!
Not once! Not a single sliver of hog
You can buy from our affiliate shop here bookshop.org/shop/darkmatter
It's limited to what's in print and available through Ingram, which fucking sucks, but our taste is great. Check out my Corpse Meditation list it's all about death :)))
Jokes aside since we don't have a brick and mortar yet we're not incentivized to sell you the Latest and Hottest. I've been out of the biz for a year so I SUPER don't care for the Latest and Hottest. We read because we have to know things and we do it compulsively!
What's up, fuckers!!! Sorry that was very rude. We're Meagan and Emily and we're starting a bookstore in east St. Paul. Hit up our landing page @ darkmatterbooks.co and sign up for the newsletter which is about how we really hate publishing
My other account is old enough to be invite only and I still haven't seen that hawg
