my other favorite thing, not mentioned often: kirstein knows the human body is fragile, and she writes frankly about what can and does happen. description is brief but vivid. it would be standard fantasy violence otherwise. i dunno man sometimes "death," "bombs," etc. are abstract concepts to people

we love backlist, books that play with genre conventions, and characters who constantly reassess the things they owe to others so we love Rosemary Kirstein's THE STEERSWOMAN. the "Big Twist" is that it's seemingly-fantasy then actually SF, but what *i* love about it...
